To my mind this is one of the best De Mille novels ever. Page-turner is an over used term but De Mille manages to keep up the tension and the interest throughout the book. In Paul Brenner, De Mille has created a believable, three-dimensional character who you will want to see come back again at some point in the future. Several times I found myself laughing out loud at a clever turn of phrase. At the end I found myself caring about the central characters and wanting to know how their lives would subsequently turn out. Is there any better accolade than that?
I really did wonder about the research that was done to create this book. De Mille's paints a vivid description of modern-day Vietnam and I have to say it has encouraged me to find out more about the country itself. The fact that the action takes place from Saigon to Hanoi allows De Mille to take us on a lengthy but always enjoyable journey through the country. De Mille explains a great deal about the war during Brenner's journey in a sensitive manner which makes it more accessible to a far wider audience and for that I think he has done a great service to combatants on both sides.
The plot, action, prose, characters are all first class and you owe it to yourself to immerse yourself in fiction which may not be highbrow but is likely to remain in your memory for a long time to come.

I have just finished reading this book which I have found very hard to put down. The same investigator as in the General's Daughter goes back to Viet Nam to revisit battlefields that he fought in 30 years ago, all the while trying to carry out an investigation on behalf of his old boss. The local secret service keeps chasing him & he has to keep on the move. The book is full of priceless quips & is great fun to read.
Try it, you will like it.

What a great read! Long but utterly absorbing, De Mille mixes a Machiavellian modern-day intrigue with riveting flashbacks to the Vietnam war with great panache. His protagonists are believeable, his narrative drive is relentless and his evocation of the country, both past and present, is wonderfully evocative.
Why not 5 stars? I badly wanted to know the fate of many of the characters. If there is a sequel on the way all is forgiven!
Very highly recommended.

Does not do what it says on the tin...
As already noted in previous reviews, this is a slow-moving 850 page history lesson of the Vietnam War, with a bit of romance thrown in. Read more

There have too many stories about Vietnam. This was an average book. The Charmschool is without doubt his finest book and hard to match
