I'm a big fan of the 'grow your own' ideology, and whilst I have a decent enough herb garden outside, I wanted something I could use inside to save me trecking outside in the rain, combining my most 'go to' herbs for cooking.
This little trough does the job nicely- although when I say 'little' I do mean little! The picture makes it look a lot bigger than it actually is- so I'm glad I ordered the salad version as well so I could sit them both together on the kitchen windowsill- with room to spare of course.
The wooden trough is actually fairly well made- a little distressed looking which gives it a traditional, country kitchen feel. It comes with four little plastic pots and some compost and the four packs of seeds (also little, but enough for the job!), which in this case were oregano, basil, chives and coriander. What I like about the trough is that if those seeds die back, you have the tub to re-use in future. I foresee me having this on my windowsill for a while, definitely.
I think this would make a lovely gift for someone to introduce them to planting their own herbs for the first time, or even for someone who doesn't have a garden of their own who would still like to grow things. Taking the size of the wooden planter into consideration, I'd personally recommend getting two of these kits for one average sized window sill. There's also a mediterranean herbs kit and a salad kit, (of which I already own) and given the price of them at the moment, they're a real bargain!
