Product Description

Product Description

From creative minds worldwide have come fantasy coin issues never listed in any other comprehensive reference. This work includes thousands of issues spawned from the non-circulating legal tender boom, but not fitting into the realm of 'legitimate' coinage. Here you'll find coins used by the inhabitants of Middle Earth in The Lord of the Rings. These are real coins, created by Tom Maringer of Scottsdale, Ark., based on reference to coins in the trilogy.

About the Author

George Cuhaj is an experienced and accomplished numismatist and researcher. George is a collector with a passion for this hobby, as well as several others. Thomas Michael has performed in-depth price analysis for the KP numismatic book line for nearly 21 years.

Format:Paperback
This is a catalogue where you can find all the coins that for various reasons did not make it to Standard Catalog of World Coins (a.k.a. Krause). Some of them were issued without consent of the countries for which they were allegedly produced, some were produced as souvenirs never meant for circulation, some are the produce of enterpreneurial spirit, while some are simple fraud. The volume which has grown since last edition by over 180 pages includes all the latest crazes on the numismatic market - the euro coins issued for territories which do not issue separate coinage (Madeira, Azores), do not issue enough real coinage (Monaco, Vaticane) or do not use the euro at all (Moldova, Belarus etc.), and various African coins - both those denominated in africas and those issued "for various African tribes". You will find here also some quite genuine and (well, almost or quasi) official coins as well, such as Swedish and Norwegian "largesse" money (distributed at various royal feasts) or Swiss "shooting thalers".
It is good to have the catalog for two reasons - you may finely locate some coins you bought because they were nice and strange, and you may see what people can do to make their dreams come true. Obviously, some dream of establishing their own states (Hutt River Province, Minerva), some dream of living in the past or in literary fiction (Shire, Middle Earth), and some only dream of getting rich quick (well, almost everything else in the volume...).

From the position of a coin creator 1 Dec 2011
By Bill Turner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I waited with baited breath for the new Unusual World Coins. I had sent emails to the editor about all of the fantasy coins I had produced. Once I scanned the catalog, about 1/3rd or more of my coin releases were not included and I must assume my emails went unread as what coins appeared in the catalog were those of my issues stocked by a specific coin dealer. Another friend that produces fantasy coins sent his information and it was acknowledged (unlike my emails) and then omitted from the catalog.

It seems obvious to me that creating such a catalog is a daunting task and I know there will be several if not many mistakes no matter how painstakingly careful you are, so I do not expect perfection. I believe the problem is poor George is responsible for way too many editions. It is as if the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.

I work in radio. Radio station listening is measured and in most large cities with only a few thousand people determining the listening habits of millions. I never thought that information was accurate, but it is the only source we have in radio. We have to realize that although the content is not perfect in Unusual World Coins by any means, it is the only option we have. Thank goodness there is an Unusual World Coins Catalog. We only wish it was more complete.

How about it Krause? How about some extra support staff to make a catalog that can be as perfect as it can be? I'd bet a better product would improve the sales volume, don't you think?

So, if you like Unusual World Coins, you must have the ONLY book that lists these coins (even though hundreds more are missing). Go ahead and add it to your bookshelf and search out the other stuff they missed. It's easily found online.
