Really well written characters in a plot that is well paced right to the end. What was really exceptional about this novel that brings out AC from the other authors is the way she develops feelings from start to finish so you are taken on this emotional rollercoaster with what the characters are experiencing. There was absolutely no doubt that Matthew loved Grace at the end & was willing to do anything for her. She is great & I cannot beleive that she has only written 3 novels to date. When I love books by any author I usually buy all of the published titles & in this case after CTC her next is in 2009. Aaaaah!!!
This is bound to leave you with a relly mushy feeling, do not miss this one - all you romance lovers out there & no you cannot borrow mine- go buy your own!!

I thought that Anna Campbell's book Claiming the Courtesan was pretty good for a romance novel, so I had no hesitation in ordering this title. Unfortunately, I thought it was poor, both in plot and characterisation, and the heroine got on my nerves fairly quickly and failed to redeem herself in my eyes. I really wish that Romance authors would make their women a bit less virtuous and a bit more realistic, and their men less two-dimensional in their heroic goodness and steadfastness. For me, the sex scenes were so overdone with endless, cliched and florid descriptions, that they became more amusing than erotic. Yes, I know it's Romance and, as such, we want a heightened sense of reality, but there's a fine line between erotism and over-the-top prose which quickly becomes wearing and is so far from the sex act that the story becomes ever more fairytale-ish and irritating. The plot, also, is extremely far-fetched and, therefore, left me cold.

Anna Campbell is a real find and I cannot praise her highly enough. This is the second book I have read by this writer and I am eagerly awaiting 'Claiming the Courtesan'.

The outline to the story has already been done but you must experience the gut-wrenching despair, fear, joy and finally, triumph. Yes, I choked up and cried many times reading this book but it was worth it. Buy it, read it and be satisfied.

A good idea that dragged on an on. And on. This book needed a decent edit. A big one. The problem with this novel is that there are whole sections which are just "too much".

It was a GREAT idea, to be fair. But a great idea for a novel, does not a great novel make.

*****SPOILERS FROM HERE.*****

Matthew's treatment by his captors was too much. Not content with keeping him locked up he also has to be beaten and scarred. It makes no sense. His captors need to keep him healthy and alive. Why the OTT "torture" and beatings? I wish authors would understand that villains are people too. No-one is 100% evil. Again, too much. The villain of this piece was too villainous to be real. All the bad stuff just became too contrived.

Now, I don't have any problems with sex in romances, in fact, it usually adds something special, if its done properly. But what we had here was repetition beyond bearing. So they had great sex. Then they had it again. Then they had it again. And then ... Well, you get the picture. Once was enough already. They'd no sooner collapsed into a peaceful bliss, than they were off again. Jeez, these characters should have died of exhaustion. Pages and pages of it. I became utterly bored of what could have been something quite sweet.

The dialogue was also just too gushing. Maybe its me, but I just didn't feel it.

The ending dragged out so much I felt like throwing this book at the wall. I wanted to shout "Just get on with it, already!" But no, they have to have some godawful contrived mutual parting of the ways just to drag things out a bit more. It just made me think that these these two people were both so pathetic that they deserve each other after all.

I've given it 3 stars because I managed to finish it. It's not a great romance. Sorry.
