Urban R&B producer/vocalist/multi-instrumentalist/songwriter R. Kelly and his supporting band Public Announcement began recording in 1992 at the tail end of the new jack swing era, yet he was able to keep much of its sound alive while remaining commercially successful. BBC Review

His ninth studio collection since emerging as a solo artist with 12 Play in 1993, Untitled is R Kelly’s first album since he went to trial on child pornography charges in the summer of 2008. Considering the accusations he faced, and was ultimately cleared of, one might’ve expected the man once crowned the “King of RnB” to craft a musical narrative in the vein of Michael Jackson’s HIStory, as a medium to further affirm his innocence.

But, perhaps surprisingly, Kelly has opted to consign his troubles to the past and focus on what made his name in the first place: a tried and tested formula of sexually themed lyricism. And who can really blame him? Classics like Bump ‘n’ Grind did, after all, make him one of the biggest stars in the world in the 90s. But the problem is that he’s not markedly developed his technique, and continues to visit familiar ground about adulterous lust. Provocative though its intentions are, it all seems a little tiresome.

After winning three Grammy Awards for I Believe I Can Fly in 1998, Kelly abandoned power ballads. Untitled is subsequently comprised almost exclusively of vocoder-saturated RnB floor-fillers, littered with suggestive and borderline perverse lyrics. A salient example is Text Me, which masquerades as a master class in phone sex but is ultimately an unromantic lesson which should put teenage boys off sending any cheeky texts. “Are you gonna give me a lap dance / While you’re wearing hot pants?” our protagonist teases; “Sink, sink deep into your middle like it’s quicksand.”

Be My #2 employs the innovative Jack Splash on production – but unfortunately its lyrics highlight a derogative attitude towards women. It’s a horn-plagued club banger encroaching on French house territory, which Kelly croons over with the silkiness of Marvin Gaye. But its misogyny prevents it being a standout, leaving Love the DJ as Untitled’s saviour, its uplifting, contagious chorus and Eurodance beat shining as brightly as his Ignition hit of 2003. Elsewhere, Echo is a dream – a smouldering workout that introduces yodelling into RnB.

Despite its polished production and vocals, Untitled is ultimately flawed by overtly macho lyrics and Kelly’s insistence to force fans to hear about his sex life. Surely the man has got more in his locker than this? --David Aaron

Unbelievable, it's hard for an artiste who's been in the game for years to still come out and produce such an amazing album. He uses The-Dream type of sound on Echo, Like I Do and Text Me and he does it so well. Religious and Elsewhere are two slow jams full of flavour and soul. The Keri Hilson assisted, rightly named Number 1 shows why he's the best in the game. He recruits the vocal skills of Robin Thicke, Tyrese and The-Dream on Pregnant but makes sure he's not overshadowed on his own song. People! no gimmicks, no jokes, you've gotta have this album - i promise, if you're a true R'n'B fan you won't be disappointed.

With his personal track record one would think that R.Kelly might want to play down his boastings about sexual prowess these days. I know!-it was never proven in court but come on!Pushing opinions about these things aside R.Kelly does possess a talent to make an RnB song about just about anything. I can imagine him scribbling down notes whilst eavesdropping on a conversation between two women on a private plane or limo thinkin' 'this is so poetic I just gotta make a song out of it!'.
The king of commercial RnB certanly delivers the good with this set but as a discerning listener I have to laugh at some of the lyrics.I presume R.Kelly is being humourous when he yodels on the track 'Echo'.He then proceeds to get Freaky by Banging-Banging-Banging-Banging the Head Board and there are more sexual antics with the closing track Pregnant. On this subject I recall Billy Paul managed to sound romantic and sensual singing the Philly classic 'Let's Make A Baby'and on her latest album Alicia Keys sings emotively about 'I was wonderin' maybe, could I make you my baby?' in Unthinkable (I'm Ready). No such intentions for Robert; his romantic 'player' passion extends to 'Girl you make me wanna get you pregnant -Knock You Up!' The main criteria for this decision appears to be her 'unbelievable booty' which shows admirable commitment in my opinion. Hilarious stuff sadly for the wrong reason. I usually really do enjoy R.Kelly's steppin grooves but this gangsa thug stuff is wearing a bit thin these days.To be fair 'I Love the Dj' is a likable RnB dancer which would go down a storm in a club.'Elsewhere' is a pleasant enough RnB ballad if lacking any originality,it reminds me of a Michael jackson style pop song.Crazy is the obligatory voice synthesised dancer/rap track.
