Album of the year as far as I'm concerned. A distinct style all of there own- but which calls upon influences from across the music spectrum. A touch of the Cocteau twins, Sigur ros, the cure to name but a few.
Lanterns have that unique ability to remove you from your reality and take you on musical journey. From the first opening bars of elodie; somehow beautiful and menacing at the same time, that fade away to reveal the gorgeous female lead vocals, right through to the closing moments of the final track; our cold decay; my attention is gripped- and it is a record that improves with every listen. An album that will be one of those rare few that never becomes tiresome. On initial listens there are the obvious melodic tracks that stand out; the aforementioned Elodie and the single; Another tale from another English town and the title track; until the colours run, but on subsequent plays, the rest of the tracks come in to their own. I do not believe their is a weak track here. Stick on the head phones and play loud; laugh, smile, cry and have your heart broken inside the surreal world of Lanterns on the lake. A great great album by a band who are surely destined to achieve great things. The world needs their beauty.
