2013 Readers’ Choice Award Nominee—BigAl’s Books & Pals

From the author of "A Whisper to a Scream" comes a story about growing up, making peace with your past, and finding a little love along the way.

In her first novel, Karen Wojcik Berner introduced book club members Sarah and Annie. Now, it’s time for another bibliophile to take center stage.

Catherine Elbert has never been good at making decisions, whether it was choosing an ice cream flavor as a small child, or figuring out what she wanted to be when she grew up. The only thing Catherine knew for sure was there had to be more to life than being stuck on her family’s farm in Wisconsin.

While watching a PBS travel show, Catherine becomes entranced by Portland, Maine. The ocean. The lobsters. The rugged coast. Nothing could be more different from the flat, nondescript farmlands of Burkesville.

Despite her parents threatening to disown her and her brothers taking bets on how many days until she comes home, Catherine settles on Peaks Island, off the coast of Portland.

She was finally free.

Or so she thought.

About the Author

Karen Wojcik Berner is the author of the Bibliophiles series, which explores the lives of fictional American suburban book club members. The first, “A Whisper to a Scream,” centers on Sarah, a stay-at-home mother of two, and Annie, a PR executive with fertility issues, each of whom thinks the other’s life is far superior to her own. “Until My Soul Gets It Right” is Catherine Elbert’s journey as she bounces from coast to coast in search of her true self. Karen grew up on the outskirts of Chicago. After graduating from Dominican University with degrees in English with a writing concentration and communications, she worked as a magazine editor, public relations coordinator and freelance writer. 5.0 out of 5 stars Until My Soul Gets It Right 9 Jun 2012
By BigAl TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
I loved the first book of The Bibliophiles series, A Whisper to a Scream. I knew the remaining books in the series would each focus on specific members of the book club introduced in the first book, and wondered how that would work. Would the stories be chronological, happening at the same time (which seemed like it would present problems), or something else. It turned out to be something else, at least in the case of Until My Soul Gets It Right.

If you've read the first book, you'll remember Catherine as the "actress" who, if you reacted to her the same as I did, might have been a bit of an enigma, and who possibly rubbed you the wrong way at times. This book goes back to Catherine's childhood, and brings her story forward to the present. It changed my opinion of Catherine for the better. It's a story that anyone should be able to relate who has wanted to escape where they grew up, for whatever reason. Berner has a talent with prose that flows smoothly and puts the reader right where they belong, inside the character's head. Until My Soul Gets It Right is another winner.

Until My Soul Gets It Right (The Bibliophiles: Book Two)
Have you ever yearned for life to be different? What would you do to accomplish this goal? Where would you go to ensure this goal was accomplished? What would you change? Karen Wojcik Berner answers these questions in her latest novel Until My Soul Gets It Right.

Synopsis:

Catherine has never felt at home whether it be in Wisconsin in Burkesville or Portland Maine. Her family does not do much to help her to consider staying at the family home in Wisconsin. Catherine's dream is becoming an actress. She leaves for Portland Maine after seeing a travel program advertising the city. Katherine finds work and a home away from her home in Wisconsin but will it be permanent? Catherine immediately finds a job and an adoptive family but will it be enough? Will her travels help her find what she is looking for?

My Thoughts:

The Bibliophiles series focuses on the members of the group. In the first book we met Annie and Sarah. This book we meet Catherine. She is a great character! I loved reading this book. The author has succeeded in creating another great character. I was drawn into the story through Catherine's experiences. This character reminded me of Jane Eyre and her dilemmas.

I felt that this story was much better than the previous book. The plot was great! The story leaves you wanting more. I liked this book and read it in two days. I look forward to the next book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Flawed But Hook-able Character 15 Oct 2012

Our heroine, Catherine Ebert, has always been "bigger" than the small Wisconsin farmtown in which she grew up - at least, in her own mind. She landed the part of "Ado Annie" in the local high school production of Oklahoma, but her straitlaced forbid her to take such an "immoral role."

She escapes to Portland, Maine, just because she saw it on TV, and later, to San Diego, but her life is based upon running from and rebelling from her parents; then upon a wealthy husband. How does Catherine sort out who SHE is, amongst all the rebellion?

The Bibliophiles is a series Ms. Berner is writing, based upon different characters who attend a suburban Illinois readers' group. What's here (in the series, so far) is slow, character growth, not a tremendous amount of external conflict or decision-making. No guns are fired (at least, not yet), nothing blows up, but there is a great deal going on under some still waters.

For myself, I enjoyed "Soul" more than "Whisper," but they are both interesting books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved this book! 5 Jan 2013

In this book, we get to know Catherine of the Bibliophiles. Her story is one of breaking free and finding herself. In a desperate attempt to break from from Burkesville, WI, Catherine travels from one coast to the other. On her own for the first time, she makes a life for herself and learns some important, sometimes difficult, lessons along the way. I very much enjoy Karen's writing style and touch of humor throughout. I look forward to more from her!
