Hurray! A wonderful contemporary romance set in my favourite city in the world, Hong Kong.

Usually I am on the fence about time jumps but it really worked well in this novel, due to the nature of the story. I loved the way Oliver and Audrey tried to fight their feelings. Their back-and-forth dialogue was especially well written.

Full points for a book which avoids all the trappings of a run-of-the-mill contemporary romance.

One Day a Year, She's His until Midnight 14 Nov. 2013
By akb--bookworm - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
Each year, Oliver Harmer and Audrey Devaney meet at a restaurant in Hong Kong to spend the day together and "catch up" on their lives. Each year, they pine for the other but know the other is "off limits." Until one year, Audrey is single again. Now, everything is different. Do they face their attraction head on? Or does Audrey disappear again at midnight?

I wasn't always comfortable with this story. Audrey is married to Oliver's best friend. Once a year, she meets up with him (with the blessing of her husband) to chat and catch up. Yet, they sit at the table ogling each other and thinking very lusty thoughts of the other. Oliver knows Audrey's husband is cheating on her while she visits him, but says nothing. And it felt like Audrey is cheating on her husband, even if not physically but emotionally. When Audrey does discover her husband had been cheating on her and uncovers the whole sordid past of entire relationship with her unfaithful husband she gets over it in about 10 minutes.

The writing wasn't really great. The author's favorite adjective was "expensive." Everything around Audrey was described as "expensive." She did try to mix it up with words like "pricey", "luxury", "luxurious", "ridiculously wealthy", "ridiculously expensive", and "the bonus of being rich," but "expensive" was still the one used the most. The fact that Oliver had a lot of money (and Audrey wasn't hurting for money either) seemed to be shoved down my throat.

This story just wasn't for me.

Elegant storytelling 2 Nov. 2013

Heartfelt story, elegantly told. From the beginning, I felt invited to join in a tantalizing adventure of sensuality and understanding, the coming together of two souls told in a completely original way. Immediartely engaging and ultimately inspiring. Nice one. Well done Nikki Logan!

Two people who want each other ... but can they have each other? 24 Oct. 2013
By vox libris - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Mass Market Paperback
What would you do if you had less than one day to convince someone to choose you?

Audrey and Oliver have a standing luncheon every December 20th. (Don't ask what prompted this particular day and celebration; it's never fully explained. But it also doesn't much matter.) They meet in Hong Kong at a swanky multi-starred restaurant and talk. They share details about their lives, professional and personal, and each struggles with the attraction felt for the other.

Oliver and Audrey's husband have been best friends forever. In fact, Oliver was the best man at their wedding. Even so, he wants her. And Audrey, even though she is married and even though she cares about her husband, wants Oliver. It isn't so much that her marriage is unhappy as much as it is unfulfilling. She wants more passion, but she is a faithful woman. Nothing will happen.

But then one December 20th, Audrey shows up for lunch with her life completely altered. She skipped the previous year's meeting, and now she sits before Oliver, angry and hurt. As we come to discover what caused her to stay away from him, we also come to discover that Oliver was perhaps a best friend in name only. He knows something about Audrey's husband that he has kept from her - something that could devastate her if she knew.

Simmering beneath the feelings of hurt and rancor is the immense sexual attraction these two have for each other. Actually, to reduce it merely to that is to reduce their relationship. They understand each other. Oliver thinks Audrey is "perfect"; she is intelligent, kind, self-effacing, and not caught up in her looks the way other beautiful, attractive women are. For her part, Audrey is drawn to Oliver. She trusts him and believes he has integrity.

As we read their story, we really want them to get together. Like, really a whole lot. For one thing, Oliver seems as if he would rock that headboard right into next month. And Audrey deserves to be the one he rocks it with.

Do they get together? Well, I won't tell you that, but you are smart people, so I'm pretty sure you can suss this out.

I'll be honest: when I started reading the book, I wasn't sure I would like it. But I was drawn in to Audrey and Oliver's story. I really liked her and I could see what Oliver found so appealing about her. I also liked Oliver, yummalicious man that he is. Nikki Logan knows how to write a compelling story, all the more admirable considering her characters stay in the same location for its duration.

This is a quick, enjoyable read.

engaging contemporary 26 Oct. 2013
By Harriet Klausner - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Mass Market Paperback
His Until Midnight
Nikki Logan
Harlequin Kiss, October 22 2013, $4.99
ISBN: 9780373207381

Australian Oliver Harmer believes in fidelity after growing up observing his father constantly cheating on his mother. Though he dates a lot, he remains a bachelor because the woman he loves Audrey Devaney is married to his friend Blake who is a wandering spouse. Every year Oliver and Audrey meet for lunch on December 20th in Hong Kong until two years when she failed to arrive from Sydney.

Shocking her, Oliver fails to attend Blake's funeral. When they met last year for lunch, she said they are not friends. He asked her what they are; as he planned to tell her how he always felt about her before she can escape back to Australia.

With a nod to the 1978 Alda-Burstyn film Same Time, Next Year, His Until Midnight is an engaging contemporary with a wonderful coda twist that explains the dysfunctional triangle, but it needed to appear earlier especially after the link died. Still fans will enjoy dining with the nice couple Oliver and Audrey at the Qinting Restaurant.
