Book Description

For homicide lieutenant Jane Candiotti, stress is part of the job. But now that she and her husband are expecting their first child, Jane is under strict instructions to take it easy. A tall order on an average day, yet never more so than when a mass shooting at a local restaurant claims six victims—including her teenaged nephew. Jane’s always been professional. But this time, it’s personal.

Before she can bring a baby into this world, Jane vows to hunt down the monster who didn’t think twice about shooting an innocent kid. But every thread of evidence leads her deeper into a tangled web of deception, violence, and murder. Her only hope of navigating the twisting turns of this case is to enlist the help of a dangerous ex-con, one who could shed light on the connection between the death of her nephew and a decades-old murder case—eventually leading her to the most shocking discovery of her career.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting read with strong plot 14 July 2014

For those who are on the ball there is a huge clue to the identity of the perpetrator of this horrific crime early in the scene.
This is a page turner, with surprises and twists coming at regular intervals. I'm not convinced that in reality a husband and wife would be allowed to work together on a homicide team, but I can buy it for the sake of the story. They do manage to work together remarkably well, even though she is his boss, there wasn't even one fight, that doesn't really ring true for me but it didn't detract from the story. Once the penny drops about where the perpetrator came from and who it was, the action kicks up a gear, but does then peter out as the trail goes cold. It is down to Jane's deductive powers, ably assisted by husband, Kenny that the perpetrator is eventually tracked down, but has he managed to put himself beyond the reach of justice?

This was a good read with a strong plot and a credible investigative process, albeit with a few unorthodox shortcuts.

2.0 out of 5 stars So predictable 7 Sept. 2013
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Over-wrought cliche abounds. A nice idea spoiled by poor characterization and over-use of stereotypes. No need to have situated this in San Francisco, could have been anywhere. Too trite and too predictable. We had a choice of two possible shooters from the very beginning - I went for the wrong one - but a lot of the book was spent putting us off the scent rather than developing the plot.

    4.0 out of 5 stars Quite a good ending 10 April 2014
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I thought it was quite a good plot. The beginning was good with different people from different backgrounds being shot in a cafe.We seem to be having a spate of lady police officers in charge of the guys lately. This one was pregnant and partnering her husband in more ways than just the one. I couldn't help thinking that she should not have been doing this particular work in an advanced stage of pregnancy - but what do I know? I'm not going to go into the story and give the plot away. I will say that I knew the identity of the killer before any of the police seemed to have figured it out.

The latter part of the book was quite exciting I have to say. I think this kept us on our toes. That's not to say that the rest of the book was boring, it wasn't, although not quite as page turning as the end. Right then, worthy of 4 stars I think Mr Clyde Phillips. Certainly worth the £1.99 I paid for it.

    4.0 out of 5 stars I liked this book 3 Sept. 2013
    Format:Kindle Edition
I enjoyed this book and will go on to read the others in the series but I gave it only four stars because it felt like the author got kind of sloppy at the end. The scenario for the killings, timewise, was a stretch yet none of the central character's, all experienced homicide officers questioned it. I felt a little let down. It almost seems like the author used a thesaurus to find alternative words for careering such as careening and caroming( of course he may just have an extensive vocabulary but the kindle fire doesn't like this word either and keeps trying to change it to a variety of others) but he was not so interested in providing a central plot line that hung together. But hey, that's just me, if you enjoy pacy detective fiction with well-rounded characters then this book is for you - ignore my minor niggle, I just get irritated by the small things.

2.0 out of 5 stars formulaic
An unbelievable plot, cardboard characters, too many weeping policemen. Wish I'd re read a McBain. Jane and Kenny relationship mawkish.
