Practical Photography

An absolute must for wildlife photography fans. 5 stars

Product Description

For more than ten years, wildlife photographer Steve Bloom travelled all over the world, roaming through the jungles of Borneo, the African savannahs and the frozen banks of Antarctica to assemble this dazzling collection of photographs of animals in their natural environments. With an international range that is rare in books of animal photography, the 200 photographs in "Untamed" (2004) brought to life a vast panorama of animal diversity and the landscapes, climates and habitats in which these creatures live. Now this terrific survey of Bloom's animal photography is available in a smaller, giftable format. Once again, the reader is treated to the serene gaze of a gorilla relaxing in the trees, a shark jumping in midair to catch its prey, a Siberian tiger traipsing through the snow in search of food and penguins congregating on an ice floe. Bloom's anthropomorphic approach reveals rage, tenderness and even humour in his subjects, capturing those fleeting moments when the gap between animal and human seems to disappear altogether. These amazing images, augmented by a personal account of Bloom's unforgettable career as a wildlife photographer, make this reissue of "Untamed" an excellent gift for all animal and photography lovers.

Stunning pictures 4 Nov 2004
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
I first read about Untamed in an airline in-flight magazine, then saw an article about it in a photography magazine. These preview articles could not fully prepare me for the scale of the actual book and I was bowled over when it arrived. Primarily a beautiful photography book, it is huge, filled with the most awesome images. Bloom has captured something of the essence of life.
More importantly, it is a moving and powerful statement for the protection of the environment. Whether you look at the pictures of Antarctica, the endangered tigers in India or the polar bears in Canada, you are intuitively aware of the danger of global warming and the importance of preserving the world's natural environments.
Bloom's artistic skill and sensitivity have created a volume I will always treasure.

magnificent 3 Nov 2004
Format:Hardcover
Magnificent.

Steve Bloom is a true artist with the camera. He manages to blur the lines separating species...you can almost sense what the animals are experiencing. What is so remarkable is that this is a book by only one photographer - one whose total dedication to the environment is clearly evident in his work. His use of light, colour and a masterly photographic technique have resulted in a body of evocative work which left me spellbound.

It's a big book, with photographs from the far reaches of the earth. It is clearly Bloom's best and most comprehensive work to date, and it shows a maturity of style as well as an understanding of both art and the environment. The mere size of the book forces you to take it slowly and give it the time it deserves. Bravo.

Amazing beauty 25 Aug 2008
Format:Paperback
Nature is incredible and full of wonder. You keep being amazed and surprised. It is one thing to just shoot a picture from nature's wonders - it's another thing to capture it in such a way that it communicates a bit of the undescribable feeling that goes with the subject. In this book I find many images to show more than just an animal. There is more to it than shooting perfect - there's the ability to show the emotion of an animal and the art that surrounds nature. I highy enjoy this book. I am a photographer myself and I know that the images in this book are more than just shots. We have put the book on a central spot in our living room, where we open it on a different page each time, so we can enjoy the great variety of the animals shown. There is so much tenderness, power, speed, love and all kinds of emotions to be seen in this publication. Truly beautiful and full of wonders... If you want to be amazed once again by the great variety and splendour of creation, then this is a highly recommended book for you.

I originally found this book in large format [A3] at the library and was blown away by the photos, the paperback copy I bought was considerably smaller but beautiful none the less.
