Pamela Clare writes a brilliant historical novel. I loved her comtemporary novels, but I can now say that I love her historical novels more. The couples in each book are fantastic. Pamela Clare really writes a love story, the emotions role off the page, the sex scenes are really good, and the men are just to die for. They protect their women without being too over bearing, and boy they are very sexy. This book was a brilliant follow up to surrender. Morgan and Amalie's story was very good. It was a brilliant romance and I thought had a great story. I would recommend reading surrender first, as another person has commented that they didnt quite follow the story line, but liked the book, it would be much better if you could read surrender first. All in all a fantastic read. If I could give her books more than 5 stars Pamela Clare would definetely get more.

As I started reading this book I realised I had no idea where it was set. The hero appeared to be Scottish, the heroine French, there were some British military types and lots of mention of French place-names with which I was unfamiliar. However the penny dropped when the book started talking about Indians and I realised we were in North America/Canada a few hundred years ago.

The Scottish aspect of the book did continue to confuse me at times. I discovered as I read the book that this was the second in a series and no doubt the groundwork was laid much more clearly in the first book. However a bunch of Scottish Rangers doing battle in Canada wasn't something I'd ever really considered before and it took me quite a while to work out which side was which and who was doing what.

As the story unfolded, though, I began to enjoy it. Amelie Chauvenet is a young woman who has been raised in a convent after the death of her mother. She finds herself in a Fort under attack by the British and her father is killed in the battle. She is asked to tend the wounds of a captured soldier, Morgan MacKinnon, who she holds at least partly responsible for her father's death. Morgan is a worthy prize, one of the skilled Rangers and someone who the Indian allies of the fighting French wish to dispatch with their own form of punishment.

For Amalie, working to heal a man so that he can be killed goes rather against the grain, especially as he doesn't conform to her initial ideas of him. He is patient, honourable and kind, and the patient/nurse effect duly takes place. MacKinnon is offered a way out of death, that of joining the French side. His loyalty to his brother Rangers doesn't allow him this option but he pretends to go along with it so that he can survive.

Excellent triology of books. I found them exciting with adventure and also romance. I found it hard to put the books down. Each book is about one of the Mackinnon's brothers who were accused of a crime they did not commit. As there punishment they had to fight with the English otherwise they would be hanged. I'm not going to say anymore as I do not want to spoil the storyline for you.
