5.0 out of 5 stars Unsung Heroes 2 Dec 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Such a small price for a complete Gem of a CD!!!. From the bright and breezy opener, "Smile", to the melancholic and reflective final track "New Words", the conducter Tom Fay hardly puts a foot wrong. His brilliant take on "Starfish", from the maybe- unsuccessful, but certainly brilliant musical "La Strada", is one of the many highlights of this disc. However, there is also low points, like the less than sublime version of Milton Schafers "She's Roses" from "Drat! the Cat!" which drags along slightly, but the quality returns with "At My Side" from "Welcome to the Club" by Cy Coleman, another of my personal favourites.

Personally , I enjoyed this CD so much because of the orchestras appreciation of the character of the pieces, shown by their subtle orchestration of dynamics in the songs. I would recommend this Cd to any fans of the major musicals, like "Miss Saigon", "West Side Story", "Les Miserables" et al, who want to hear the less publicised musicals that are floating around our town centres.

The reasons I gave this CD 5 stars, then- Brilliant musicality from the orchestra and Tom Fay, Great, catchy melodies and ear-pleasing harmonies, fantastic contrast between the selected pieces, and the great choruses

4.0 out of 5 stars MISSGYDER TOTALLY MISGUIDED 20 July 2004
By Larry Moore - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is not so much a review as a rebuttal; I was the orchestrator for this album, MISSGYDER's assertion of totally synthesized sound is totally incorrect: the charts were played by 4 reeds, 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, tuba, harp, percussion, drums, keyboards, and a string section. I sorry the sound didn't meet the approval of the reviewer labeled MISSGYDER, but I can testify to the reality of the orchestra, the players, and my scores which are at the Library of congress.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hidden Treasures 29 Aug 2000
By Judy Gettelfinger - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The shows from which these songs were taken may have been unsuccessful, but this compilation of their best selections is a jewel. What a treat it was to be entertained by so many talented Broadway stars for the price of a single recording. From the hilarious "Sherry" to the sweet "New Words", one listen to this CD and I was hooked!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unsung perhaps, but often wonderful 14 Feb 2001
By Gary A. Levine - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Just because a musical was not successful, that doesn't mean that there were no good songs in it (pardon the double negative). These selections may be songs that are not well known from shows in the same category, but some of these are real gems, sung by fine show singers. My favorites are "Smile" (from Smile), "Ragtime Romeo" (The Vamp), "Sherry!" (Sherry!), and "She's Roses" (Drat! The Cat!).
