Product Description

Product Description
Unstrange Minds documents Grinker's quest to find out why autism is so much more common today, and to uncover the implications of the increase. His search took him to Africa, India, and East Asia, to the National Institutes of Mental Health, and to the mountains of Appalachia. What he discovered is both surprising and controversial: There is no true increase in autism. Grinker shows that the identification and treatment of autism depends on culture just as much as on science. As more and more cases of autism are documented, doctors are describing the disorder better, school systems are coding it better--and children are benefiting. Filled with moving stories and informed by the latest science, Unstrange Minds is unlike any other book on autism. It is a powerful testament to a father's quest for the truth, and is urgently relevant to anyone whose life is touched by one of history's most puzzling disorders.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent, interesting, well written and positive, 7 Nov 2008
By Mr. RJ WILMSHURST "rjwilmsi" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is a cross between the autobiography of a father of an artistic girl, the biography of an autistic child and an essay on the current state of autism treatment and attitudes towards autism around the world, with a particular focus on the United States and the United Kingdom. This may sound like a strange combination, but the book is in fact a very well written, ties together in an extremely coherent and intelligent way and is therefore a highly recommended read for anybody with an interest in autism or mental disorders and societal attitudes, diagnosis, political treatment and medical care.

What Grinker manages to do so well is combine all of the above information but still provide an entertaining read and an interesting story to follow. Scientific research papers are mentioned, but the book is not designed to be a thoroughly scientific piece, therefore information about research does not get in the way of the enjoyment of the book by a non-scientist reader. Grinker also manages a comprehensive critique of government policy and social attitudes towards autism and related mental disorders such Asperger's syndrome, tracing the origins of the illnesses back to the first uses of the terms. His balanced reporting and analysis of some clearly poor historical decision-making and policy, unfair marginalisation of those affected by the illness and current media hype surrounding the "autism epidemic" and "MMR vaccine causes autism", is admirable. Grinker manages to report the facts, provide a balanced and fair analysis, criticise where necessary, but not come across at all as harsh or biased due to his daughter's condition. In fact, what becomes most clear is that Grinker deeply loves his daughter, understands the difficulties that autism presents to anybody involved with it and can sympathise with the various different positions people hold.

This book is highly recommended for anybody with an interest in autism or related mental illnesses, anybody interested in social attitudes or government policy towards mental illness, or simply those who wish to read and intelligent work about an issue that affects real people and is continuously misreported in the headlines.
