Orson Welles once said that directing a movie was like playing with the greatest toy train set in the world, and Tony Scott seems to be taking him literally. With the caboose of Scott's Taking of Pelham 123 barely in the distance, the filmmaker turned to Unstoppable, a train-chase picture loosely inspired by a true story (and perhaps just a smidgen by Runaway Train, the 1985 film based on an Akira Kurosawa script). At a Pennsylvania rail yard, some clueless workers let an unmanned train get loose, and the thing is soon hurtling across the countryside. Did we mention that it's pulling a few cars' worth of highly toxic material? Did you doubt it would be? Meanwhile, old-time engineer Denzel Washington and new conductor Chris Pine are making a routine run nearby--of course, in the movies, a routine run almost always turns into something wild. This odd couple is the only hope for stopping the runaway, while upper management dithers and an operations-room dispatcher (Rosario Dawson) spends most of the movie talking into her headset. Scott is an unabashed manipulator, and he yanks all the strings at his disposal for this whipped-up pageant: song cues, hype-filled reaction shots, stunts aplenty. It's all so aggressive, it makes you wish the exciting story could be allowed to tell itself. But the pulse does quicken, if you can turn your mind off for a while. And although it's faint praise, the movie is undeniably better than Pelham 123.--Robert Horton

Product Description

Inspired by actual events, Unstoppable is an adrenaline rush fuelled by director Tony Scott's signature mark of propulsive action rooted in the reality of ordinary people placed in extraordinary circumstances. A veteran train engineer (Denzel Washington) and a young conductor (Star Trek's Chris Pine) race the clock to stop an unmanned runaway train--effectively a missile the size of a skyscraper--and prevent disaster in a heavily populated area.

4.0 out of 5 stars exactly what you expect 28 Mar 2011
If you have seen the trailer for this film you know exactly what is going to happen in it: runaway train with highly explosive cargo heads towards built up area with only two gutsy railwaymen and their underappreciated female manager between it and disaster! Indeed, even if you haven't seen the trailer you could probably sketch the back story of every character in the film and how these stories are going to resolve just based on the 25 word summary I have just given.

That said, over the past 6 months I have found few more entertaining ways to spend a few hours in the cinema. Denzel Washington, Chris Pine and Rosario Dawson are typically charasmatic in roles that don't tax them excessively but which they deliver effortlessly, and the predictability of the movie strangely adds rather than detracts from the tension.

Perhaps not a classic, but crowd-pleasing enterainment, professionally done and almost guaranteed to leave you with a smile on your face.

5.0 out of 5 stars unmissable 31 Dec 2011
I was dubious about watching this film as I thought the train out of control theme has been overdone. But I recommend you give this one a try as it manages to keep you gripped all the way through. You will probably assume you know what happens in the end, but that doesn't matter, it will still keep you watching and is a great action film that you can easily watch again. Take a ride!

4.0 out of 5 stars Proper popcorn movie 14 Feb 2011
Huge frieght train is accidentaly released unmanned when brakes are turned off during a routine move and so begins the movie...

A great example of how to make a very simple story engaging for a full movie duration, the action ramps up nicely with the speed of the train and the increasingly frantic efforts to stop it before it careers off track to catastrophic effect.

Introduction of principle characters family members adds a little padding but very hard to recall a Mr Washington movie that failed to satisfy. His presence even made the ridiculous Pelham 123 watchable. He excels again in unstoppable.

Good action movie, highly dramatised but recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars 'EDGE OF YOUR SEAT 'ADRENALIN-RUSH' 3 Jun 2014
By rbmusicman TOP 500 REVIEWER
Based on an actual event, it tells of the heroics of train driver 'Frank Barnes' ( Denzel Washington ) and conductor 'Will Colson' ( Chris Pine ) as they risk their lives to prevent a disaster.
Due to human error 'train 777' becomes a runaway, it's hauling several carriages. many holding highly volatile cargo, if the train cannot be stopped or and slowed down before it reaches the severe bend in the track at 'Stanton' many lives could be lost.
the film will draw you on board with the chase to catch '777' and the tension will engulf you, you'll not take your eyes off the screen.
'Denzel Washington' rarely makes a bad movie, this does not buck the trend it's an exciting watch.
Films such as this is why we own HD players.

King of the eyeball-bleeding fast-edit Tony Scott Directing
A juggernaut train with a deadly cargo loses its brakes.
If it ploughs into the civilian area at the end of the line there’ll be carnage.
Denzel Washington and Chris Pine are at the stricken controls.
Count me in baby...

"Unstoppable" does exactly what it says on the tin - and I'll bet it hired like a mother when it came out. Putting the ‘thrill’ into ‘thriller’ – it’s the kind of pump-action entertainment the Americans are just ‘so’ good at.

OK - it hasn’t got the story depth of say "Flight" - but it has the mighty Denzel and the very likeable Chris Pine doing their best "I'm Boss - You Grunt" routine. Cue running along the top of carriages at ludicrous speeds - and on it goes to the fantastic hugging a curvy bridge sequence at the steel-screeching climax...

Fans should note however that if you buy – avoid the temptingly cheap ‘US’ edition on BLU RAY – it’s REGION A LOCKED and therefore won’t play on our machines unless they’re chipped to be ‘all regions’ (which few are).

Go for the UK issue instead - buckle up, bite into your lettuce and cucumber sandwich and thank God for British Rail…

4.0 out of 5 stars A good bit of Hokum 2 Dec 2013
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
I saw bits of this on TV so decided that in spite of the typical american approach to railway safety (!) it was sufficiently entertaining to warrant buying it on Blu Ray. Good quality transfer.

Bought this as a stocking filler for the other half as he is a true Denzel fan! Film is a good watch, Denzel plays his usual self. Film came quickly and did what it said on the tin!
