Book Description

11 Sep 2012 Lynburn Legacy (Book 1)
A modern, magical twist on the Gothic Romance and Girl Detective genres, this book will appeal to fans of both Beautiful Creatures and the Mortal Instruments series. Reviewers have praised the take-charge heroine and the spellbinding romance.

Bound together. Worlds apart.

Kami Glass is in love with someone she's never met—a boy she's talked to in her head since she was born. This has made her an outsider in the sleepy English town of Sorry-in-the-Vale, but she has learned ways to turn that to her advantage. Her life seems to be in order, until disturbing events begin to occur. There has been screaming in the woods and the manor overlooking the town has lit up for the first time in 10 years. . . . The Lynburn family, who ruled the town a generation ago and who all left without warning, have returned. Now Kami can see that the town she has known and loved all her life is hiding a multitude of secrets—and a murderer. The key to it all just might be the boy in her head. The boy she thought was imaginary is real, and definitely and deliciously dangerous.

Kami always thought having an imaginary friend was perfectly normal, desirable even, until said imaginary friend winds up being a member of the mysterious Lynburn clan, who have returned to Sorry-in-the-Vale after an extended absence.

Faced with the boy in her head suddenly being the boy in her classroom, Kami isn't sure what to think. But when spooky goings on coincide with the return of the Lynburns, she's determined to find out who, or what, they are and what their presence means for her sleepy Cotswolds village. Armed with an enthusiastic desire for the truth and a mildy disturbing lack of self-preservation and backed up by misanthropic Angela and the lovely Holly, not to mention the two Lynburn boys, Kami sets off in her quest to emulate the great lady sleuths.

As a huge fan of Sarah Rees Brennan's The Demon's Lexicon trilogy I was chomping at the bit to read this latest installment from her, and Unspoken doesn't disappoint. Filled with her trademark quirky humour, strong female characters full of personality and twisty storylines, Unspoken is the sort of novel you itch to get back to reading. The ending is one of the most heart-wrenchingly, utterly devastatingly perfect I've read in a while and I wish I had the sequel right now! If you're looking for something a little different, this is the book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Lynburn Legacy by Sarah Rees Brennan 19 Feb 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I went into this book thinking it was going to be a romance. I mean common, with that summary there isn't anything else you are going to think. This is why I get pissed at goodreads summaries from time to time. They make so many of the books sound more romantic than they actually are. I could make a list of all the books I was tricked into thinking were overly romantic and didn't want to read. No. I do like romances but I don't like reading a book that is focused primarily on the romance (unless you count chic lits but I don't read them THAT often, only when I need to chill). I like books with amazing plots. This book had one. I don't think saying this book blew my mind is enough, it would have blown my mind if I had high expectations, I had low expectations because I went into the book thinking it was primarily a romance, to say it blew my mind is understating what it did to me.
Oh god I thought that Kami was going to be a pathetic love sick teenager. I was so far of the mark it's not even funny. She is one of my all time favorite female leads. She is hard working, dedicated, loyal and absolutely hilarious. This book had the whole gothic feel to it, yet it was also light because of Kami's humor.
She hears horrible things about Jared and even when everybody tells her to stay away from him she doesn't. How could she when she knows him better than everyone else?
Even WHEN she doubts him she sticks by him because how could she not?
I think their first encounter was absolutely hilarious. How they both freaked out. *shakes head*
Oh yeah and umm yes I suck but one of the best things about this book was Jared. OMG his character. It's so funny how he is scared to touch her and everything. It annoyed me when I was reading the book but now I am just like.. oh Jared.

There were elements that I did like, especially the non-stereotypical YA. However I struggled to get into the story.

The relationship between Kami and Jared is complex; having known each other all their lives but not actually believing the other was real. To suddenly discover that they are real, that would mess with your mind. They know each other and yet they don't know each other. I liked watching their relationship develop.

What are the Lynburns? What is their past? What made this book more interesting is not even Jared, the male lead, knows what is going on. Normally the male leads are the ones with all the answers. It was nice both of them discovering things together. Especially since Jared is a Lynburn.

Unspoken has two diversions from the typical YA I read. One, it is set in England rather than America. I picked up the book waiting to discover what area of American it will be set only to find is based in a fictional English town. I was pleasantly surprised. Not only is Unspoken set in England but it is set in the Cotswolds, a quaint, typical English countryside. While I grew up in the south east, close to London, my family originated from these areas. While I am not the sort that enjoys visiting small villages in the middle of nowhere, I have frequently been to Bath and occasionally Gloucester. Getting back to my roots. I liked this change in setting. Very rarely do I read a book set in England and normally they are set in London.

Secondly, the main character, Kami, is of Asian descent. Asian and other characters of foreign descent are slowly becoming more common place in YA but normally they are secondary. To have the main heroine as Asian is definitely a nice change. There is even a picture of an Asian model on the UK cover.

4.0 out of 5 stars Different Take on Paranormal 12 Nov 2012
By Jodzie
Format:Paperback
In Short
- Unspoken has a great concept behind it with a unique storyline.
- Unspoken is written in a different way from most YA books.
- Kami the main character is witty, funny, determined, caring.
- READ UNSPOKEN!

In Long
Unspoken has a great concept behind it and I was so excited about the whole idea that Kami has this person in her head who she talks to. I haven't ever read a book like it so I was really intrigued to see what sort of relationship Brennan had created between Kami and this guy who she talks to in her head.
As soon as I started Unspoken I discovered that Brennan hasn't just written a storyline which is very unique but she has also written it in a unique way. It's hard to explain the sort of style that she has written this in but it's very unique, witty and quirky. I personally can't make my mind up about whether I like it or not and I know this will be the case for others as well as some hating and some loving it. However I think, for me, at most points it suits Unspoken, there was a few points that I got really confused and didn't understand something because of the style and also most indirect approach to what Brennan was trying to get across but for the majority of the time it worked.
The story pretty much starts straight away and from the beginning I found myself addicted to the story, wanting to know more about this guy Kami was talking to. He had such an interesting character, one which made me want to find more out about him, especially who he was and where he was.
As things started to unravel I did find that the storyline sometimes slowed down and this was often when I would realise I had to go to sleep or something and ended up putting the book down.
