Review

Lisa Jackson shows yet again why she is one of the best at romantic suspense. A pure nail biter. (Harlan Coben on YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW)

Shiveringly good suspense! Lisa Jackson ratchets up the tension as one woman's desperate search for her missing son takes her to the very brink of losing her husband, her sanity, her very self. (Lisa Gardner on YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW)

'WITHOUT MERCY blends murder mystery with romance and religious conspiracy and should appeal to fans of all three.' (West Australian on WITHOUT MERCY)

A fast-paced and surprisingly complex story... . The depiction of the protagonist... reaches an unusual depth, and the crisp, skillful language infuse every sentence with suspense...will keep readers riveted. (Publisher's Weekly on WITHOUT MERCY)

'A fast moving thriller with plenty of twists and turns, and an easy flowing style that readily catches the reader up in its thrall.' (Canberra Times on MALICE)

4.0 out of 5 stars good characters 19 Dec. 2002
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
Shelby Cole returns to Bad Luck, Texas after receiving a photograph of her now 10 year old daughter who she believed had died at birth. There she must not only confront her dictatorial father - the judge, but also the man who broke her heart Nevada Smith.
Characterisation good with some well written sexy scenes; lots happening within this small town but it's easy to keep track of the characters. I hung everybody - except the right person a nice twist.
However, although the characters were well drawn and the plot complex enough to be entertaining I was a little disappointed at the ending. Suddenly these very strong characters just seemed to shrink before your eyes. Then the book was over.
The wrapping was excellent but I was not so keen on the ribbon and bow that finished it off.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting romantic suspense 6 Aug. 1999
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
In Bad Luck, Texas, Deputy Sheriff Shep Marson pays a "friendly" visit to former law enforcement official Nevada Smith. He informs the outcast Nevada that Caleb Swaggert has recanted his testimony that convicted Ross McCallum. Ross is a free person after spending a decade behind bars. Since Nevada was the arresting official, Shep worries about trouble. He makes it clear to Nevada that he plans to run for sheriff and wants nothing to interfere with his candidacy.
At the same time, Shelby Cole leaves Seattle to return to her hometown after receiving a package that contains evidence that her daughter is still alive. Nine years ago, Shelby was informed that the baby she gave birth to died. She meets Nevada, the father of the child, and tells him what she learns. They work togetehr trying to uncover the truth of what happened to the child even as they wonder about the coincidence of the package timed with Ross' release and return to Bad Luck. Both Nevada and Shelby realize that they still love one another, but Ross seeks vengeance on those who incarcerated him and someone has set in motion the opportunity for him to succeed.
Romantic suspense readers will loudly speak praise for Lisa Jackson's thriller. The tension builds higher and higher until the story line seems ready to explode. The characters are an interesting cast who struggles to overcome mistrust. Ms. Jackson has written a terrific tale that will garner her many new readers.

2.0 out of 5 stars 1999 ROMANCE erroneously repackaged as suspense 28 Dec. 2013
Format:Paperback
Read from library. Started reading & found it didnt flow so looked further into this. This is 1999 ROMANCE repackaged to make it appear like her suspense books. See fantastic fiction which shows original cover & genre ie romance. New cover of handcuffs & flash saying you will like if you like karen rose, is MISLEADING. There is very little to this book. Its a typical romance.
I couldnt get into this and skip read. (Bear in mind I just finished ready to die by this author so no wonder this book didnt gel with me). See reviews amazon.com. I endorse comments by 1 & 2* reviewers. Glad I didnt buy this book.
PS authors note at back confirms reissue but also says Ready to die will be out aug 2013 & is book 4 in alvarez/pescoli series. In fact its book 5. That says it all.
