5.0 out of 5 stars Masterful, intelligent, intense 4 July 2013
By Roman Clodia TOP 100 REVIEWER
After her excursion into the past in Criminal, Slaughter moves us right into the present in this book which catches up with Lena Adams, Jared Long - and their complicated relationships with Sara Linton and Will Trent.

I found some of Slaughter's early books rather formulaic, and dependent on schlocky horror for their impact. Her latest work, though, is far maturer: in tone, in emotional intelligence, in plotting and in writing. This is, like Criminal, an intense read with some powerful currents being brought to the surface. Characters are both themselves, and yet also develop and grow - particularly Lena. I never found her particularly empathetic previously, but she has become far more interesting here: not likeable, but sympathetic all the same.

I don't want to say anything more about the plot than what is in the publishers blurb above as that would spoil this for new readers. Suffice it to say this is twisting and compulsive, with a complicated time-structure which adds to the addictive feel of the narrative. Don't start this just before bed: you'll be up all night!

Slaughter really seemed to have come of age as a writer with her last book - and this one keeps that trajectory moving forward.

Highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars MORE PADDING THAN A SUMO FANCY DRESS OUTFIT 14 July 2014
I must be missing something here.
Something started to happen on page 256.
You usually find the first 100 pages might be a bit of a struggle as you are introduced to the characters but this really was a struggle.
There seemed such a lot of conversation we did not need to be party too. At times it just rambled on and on.

Some bad people break into a cop couples house and try to kill them. Is this linked to a raid carried out by the female detective of the couple in question?
Meanwhile undercover cop is close to the heart of the matter.

Brutal at times, tedious at others I have given Slaughter a go and found she is not for me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Unseen 26 Dec 2013
Karin Slaughter brings back her usual cast of characters from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and local law enforcement agencies in her newest novel in this long-running series. Foremost are Special Agent Will Trent, a terrific, intuitive cop now working undercover, who has overcome what is described as a Dickensian childhood (he has that in common with several other characters here); his significant other, Sara Linton, a pediatric attending physician and former medical examiner in Atlanta, still dealing with the death of her husband, the partner of detective Lena Adams, five years before; Sara's stepson Jared Long, a motorcycle cop with Macon PD; and Jared's wife, the aforementioned Lena Adams. Loss is a recurring theme here: among others, Lena's twin sister had died 10 years earlier, and Lena herself has just had a miscarriage.

The novel opens with what at first blush appear to be a simple home invasion, but it quickly appears that there is more to it than that: The home in question is Lena and Jared's, and the outcome is horrific: Two of the intruders are killed, Jared nearly so. Much of the story arises in the aftermath of a high-target raid conducted by the cops, flashbacks to which appear regularly. The plot is a complex one, involving some very unsavory people, the identity of some of whom is unknown until after some surprising twists.

For reasons that are not entirely clear, for the better part of the first hundred pages we hear about how much Lena provoked deep animosity, verging on hatred, in those one would think would be closest to her, but the reader is not really given the reasons behind it. Well, there is what seems to be obvious, it is true: over the years she seems to bring death, injury and pain to those working with or married to her.

By Stephanie De Pue TOP 1000 REVIEWER
New York Times and international #1 bestselling author Karin Slaughter releases UNSEEN, a tough new mystery/thriller in her series featuring Georgia Bureau of Investigations detective Will Trent. Mind you, Slaughter, a Georgia peach herself by birth, is anything but a Georgia peach/Southern belle in her writing: you can tell because she has received high praise from no less than the current dean of American hard-boiled fiction, Michael Connelly, who describes her work as "crime fiction at its finest."

Will Trent's latest case is, like most of Slaughter's work, set in Georgia. It finds him posing as Bill Black, an apparently violent ex-con who lives around Macon, Ga., rides a motorcycle to the local hospital where he has found a job that positions him so that he can steal drugs. His cover has worked and he has attracted the attention of Tony Dell, a slightly-built wiry drug dealer who thinks the big man might be useful to him. However, as Trent works undercover, cut off from the support of his lover, Dr. Sara Linton, a pediatrician and former medical examiner for a county four hours south of Atlanta, whom we have previously met many times in this series, Will is not doing as well as he needs to. Sara, a good detective herself, has no idea where Will has gone, or what he's up to, but she must come to Macon's hospital because of a cop shooting: Her stepson, Jared Long, has been gunned down in his own home. Sara holds Lena Adams, Jared's wife, responsible: Lena, a detective, has been a magnet for trouble all her life, and Jared's shooting is not the first time someone Sara loved had to pay for Lena's troublesome nature.
