Unsavory Delicacies - Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat and Think With Your Taste Buds

Unsavory Delicacies is made up of three short stories that will give you a taste of tantalizing suspense.
Crème Brulee - Monique Beauvais an agent for Ares. She has no qualms about double crossing those who supply her with the information she has been assigned to acquire. Curtis White is truly a nerd that has no qualms about drooling like a dog when he meets the beautiful Monique. But this story has a moral...Never underestimate a Nerd.

To the Last Bite - Dennis Kirby is a food critic who has a tendency of "killing" a restaurant due to the comments he posts in his column To the Last Bite. After eating one of the most delicious meals of veal and liver he puts in a request to meet the Chef hoping to find out his cooking secret. Of course the Chef declines to give out his secret recipe. Kirby has nothing but praise for this superb meal and reflects his delight in his next column. But what was really in such a spectacular dish? Kirby will soon find out.

Shashlyk and Morozhenoe - Ridley Fox is a CIA operative. He has been assigned to take possession of some nationally important documents that are in the possession of Maksim Antanov. Antonov is known to be linked to the Arms of Ares and is next in line to take over after his father retires. But the secrets discovered by Ridley will have Antonov in his pocket for as long as he wants.

Watch for my review for Russell Brooks' next upcoming thriller Chill Run which will be available on December 1, 2011. Follow him on his website as a reminder <...>.

I was sent Unsavory (I always want to put the "u" in that word!) Delicacies by the author as a review request some while ago, but have really struggled to find time at the weekend to get it read - which is crazy as it's a very short read!

Unsavory Delicacies is a trilogy of short stories, namely - Crème Brûlée, To the Last Bite & Shashlyk and Morezhenoe. The three stories are very short, very fast paced & quite thrilling! The stories are all interconnected by a restaurant (not the same restaurant, mind) & an underlying theme - revenge. Crème Brûlée begins in a restaurant in Old Montreal (love stories that take place in my native Canada!) & features spies & some serious intrigue. To the Last Bite is about a food critic, Dennis Kirby, who takes great pleasure in ripping restaurants apart in his column. This one is not for the faint of heart, or those with a delicate stomach! Shashlyk and Morezhenoe takes place in Russia & features a character from Crème Brûlée, Ridley Fox & again features spies - this time with a Russian Mafia twist.

All 3 stories are excellently written - my only regret is that they are so short. I think that all 3 could have been a lot longer & still would have been as good. These left you wanting more - a lot more.........but maybe that was Brooks' idea all along!

Unsavory Delicacies 11 Jun 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Unsavory Delicacies by Russell Brooks is a terse collection of three killer culinary short stories. There's sex, exquisite dining, and a dead body or two!

Creme Brulee is the first story in the book, offering up international spies and conspiracies with a side of revenge!

In To the Last Bite, we meet Dennis Kirby, a renown food critic whose reviews means life or death in the restaurant business. His last critique subject was better than any other he'd had before, until he finds out the secret ingredient!

Lastly we have Shashlyk and Morozhenoe. In this tale, Mr. Brooks uses a character from one of his previous stories. In this, we read of spies and covert operations dealing with the Russian Mafia. What they came to find and what is actually hidden away, are two very different things!

Unsavory Delicacies was a very quick and amusing read. I do feel the author could have spent more time with each story, adding to the plot and length of the tale. I realize this is a collection of short stories, but they did seem even too short for that. Honestly, this book really wasn't "my thing" but I'm sure there are plenty of readers who would truly enjoy this! There are violent and adult situations not suited for younger readers.
