Amazon.co.uk Review

Cutting the electricity only really began to sound like a good idea when Kurt Cobain picked up his acoustic on Nirvana's Unplugged In New York sessions, and on the whole it tends to bring out the worst in an artist and their audience--muso tendencies, obscure cover versions, and a reverential hush punctuated only by obsequious applause. Alanis Morissette's Unplugged, accordingly, is a mixed bag--there's plenty of dispensable moments, like the warbly dirge of "Joining You", or a singularly pointless "Head Over Feet", almost a carbon copy of the original. The gems, though, include a stripped-down, Tori Amos-esque take on "You Oughta Know", which reverberates with repressed bitterness over the minimal tones of piano and keening violin. Quite wonderful, but if only the sycophantic industry crowd weren't quite so enthusiastic in their praise. --Louis Pattison

I can truthfully say that i was not an alanis fan... until now. Having heard her latest single Hands Clean and really enjoyed it i decided to buy one of her CDs. Initially i didn't know which one to get but after some serious contemplation i decided on unplugged. Best choice i've made for a long time.

The acoustics and piano sound really good and these add emotion to the songs in my opinion. The songs themselves are melodic complimented by alanis' unique writing and singing talents. To my surprise and pleasure i recognised a couple of the songs as ones i had always liked but never realised that they were on the album as i didn't know the titles of these tracks nor remembered the artist that sung them.

I don't know about anybody else but i was really chuffed when i realised that i liked every single track on an album that previous to me buying it i only knew one of them. This album is now at the top of my pile meaning that the track 'you learn' will be waking me up every weekday. As i said it is a breath of fresh air, the first album to bring tears to my eyes.

This third (live) album is a collection of the best songs from "Jagged Little Pill" and "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie" plus three unreleased songs and "King of Pain" and "Uninvited" thrown in for a great value album.

Let's get one thing straight first - Alanis sounds fantastic live, and even though there's only three new songs, the live versions on this CD are so different you really are getting a brand new album. "You Oughta Know" is far more of a sad song, rather than an angry song as portrayed on "Jagged", and it's clear that the superb "That I Would Be Good" was made to be performed live.

Not only that, but the new tracks are fantastic too - "Princes Familiar" being the standout, and if you ever thought that Sting's "King of Pain" was a beautiful song, then Alanis Morissette's will leave you knocked for six.

All in all, this has to not only one of the best MTV Unplugged albums in the series, but also one of the best albums of the year, and well worth more than a couple of listens. Buy it to believe it.

Simply beautiful 28 Nov 1999

I'm a bit biased in that I'm a huge Alanis fan, but when I heard she was doing an Unplugged album, I wasn't sure what to expect... I guess I was worried that it would be full of her screeches and moans throughout.... how wrong was I?! It's amazing, all of her classics (yup, even after only two albums she's got classics) sung with new twists, and a few unreleased songs... King of Pain practically reduced me to tears, and No Pressure Over Cuppaccino did likewise. I'd definatley recommend this to non-Alanis fans.

New songs, heart-felt singing, gorgeous arrangements
