About the Author

Judy Gelman is co-author of The Book Club Cookbook: Recipes and Food for Thought from Your Book Club's Favorite Books and Authors (Penguin, 2004), the first cookbook designed for book discussion groups. The second edition of The Book Club Cookbook will be published in 2012. She is also co-author The Kids' Book Club Book: Reading Ideas, Activities, and Smart Tips for Organizing Terrific Kids' Book Clubs (Penguin, 2007) and Table of Contents: From Breakfast with Anita Diamant to Dessert with James Patterson - a Generous Helping of Recipes, Writings and Insights from Today's Bestselling Authors (Adams, 2010). A bit of a strange book, to be sure, that is probably aimed at the ultra-obsessive "Mad Men" fan. A promised look inside the various kitchens, bars and restaurants that featured in a (popular?) American television series.

The book describes best its raison d'être: "To ensure an authentic Mad Men experience, every recipe is introduced through a specific scene in the show. And to enhance your enjoyment of the food and drink we scoured period cookbooks and magazines for tips on throwing a successful cocktail or dinner party."

OK... So what do you really get? Essentially recipes taken from back-in-time. Nothing more, nothing less. Oh, but it is wrapped up with elements from the television series. Does it work? To someone who has never seen the series it just looks like a poor attempt to shoehorn some recipes into a book. To a devoted fan? Maybe it is different. You might enjoy the references to the series, might find additional inferences and links of benefit and maybe even enjoy recreating a meal or drink from a favourite scene.

If you are looking JUST for classic old recipes, perhaps for a dinner party, there are many many great books out there to help you achieve your aims. This book is probably not one of them. This might sound unfair but the additional packaging just gets in the way of it being a good recipe book that could fulfil a need. As a composite (unofficial) tie-in to a television programme it might be a totally different proposition. Certainly there appears to be a lot of tie-in material that could appeal to hardcore fans. But to the passive viewer or even a non-viewer, sorry it doesn't work.

My compliments to the authors on extending Mad Men's attention to period detail to the food and drinks in the series.
This is an excellent collection of Mad Men-related recipes for cocktails, appetizers, salads, main courses, desserts and sweets.
Every recipe is authentic, all food and drink either appears in the series or was served in the 1960s by the bars and restaurants featured in the series.
What makes this book truly delightful is the introduction to every recipe, describing the scene in question and providing lots of interesting details about the food or restaurant.
Well designed, well structured and painstakingly, lovingly researched.
Perhaps you prefer full colour photographs throughout, but I find the colour insert in perfect keeping with the 'period authenticity'.

This is a very good addition to my ever growing cookbook collection!

It is much better than I expected. Definitely I recommend it to anyone, especially for those who are fan of the 50’s and 60’s era. Loved the pics, although they could have added more of them to have a slight idea on how the dishes should look. Super fast shipping!

The authors really did their homework. In addition to culling some of the classic recipes of the era ( Lindy's original cheesecake recipe - that alone is easily worth the price of the book), to Chicken Kiev from the Russian Tea Room, to the original Mai Tai cocktail, they have resurrected some of the more nostalgic traditonal cuisine of the sixties, and made the dishes both appetizing and easily reproducible. There are great recipes for holiday entertaining; try the blini and caviar, mango chutney and cream cheese spread, or the jumbo prawn dish - easy and impressive. The pineapple upside down cake was really good (although I couldn't bring myself to use maraschino cherries - updated the cake with macadamia nuts instead). The descriptions of all the old New York great restaurants are wonderful, and the historical tidbits relating the food to the events of the times are fascinating. And the best part is, you can use it to review the past few seasons of Mad Men plot lines while waiting (interminably) for the season premiere in March. Great idea - try out some recipes for the holidays, and then use your favorites to host a Mad Men season opener party!

My memories of the early 1960s are vivid because 10-year olds never forget those transformative moments in their lives. Of course, I will never forget the day JFK was killed. But I also remember the many evenings when my parents would entertain their friends, take dancing lessons in the basement to learn the Cha-Cha, sit around the kitchen table smoking cigarettes, nursing rye and ginger ales and laughing loudly. I'd be in pajamas, sneaking looks from the stairs or the living room, until I got shooed off to bed. The Mad Men series has clearly evoked this time in a powerful way and now, the wonderful cookbook from Peter Zheutlin and Judy Gelman, brings out the details even more vividly. Full disclosure, I don't like the show and have only watched three or four episodes. But I do get the connection to a different era, similar to Revolutionary Road, that has clearly struck a chord among millions of viewers. The cookbook offers a bunch of great recipes, from Old Fashions to canapes, that show up in various episodes. The authors didn't take the easy way out and throw together a few recipes and photos. Instead, Zheutlin and Gelman went on an impressive scavenger hunt to find the wonderful details of where these dishes and drinks originated, who invented them, and how they came to be classics. For Mad Men fans, this is not just a nice memento to accompany the series, it's a fun and well-written read that will add a new layer of pleasure in the watching.

I went looking for a unique holiday gift and what I found in The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook: Inside the Kitchens, Bars, and Restaurants of Mad Men far exceeded my expectations. From it's slick layout and photos to the painstakingly researched material, the cookbook connects me not only to the Mad Men series, but also to the decade of my youth. The recipes (Jerry's Deviled Eggs, Betty's Swedish Meatballs, Kitty's Pineapple Upside-Down Cake) bring me back to family gatherings and holiday partys. But this is more than just a cookbook. The authors' ability to mix recipes with cultural context makes for a great "period piece cookbook". Bravo!

I don't often say Yes when an author, publisher, or PR company asks me to review a book, but I couldn't resist it this time. I've become a Mad Men fan to a rather silly degree, perhaps because I grew up in New York during the 1960s so the background is extremely real to me. When I was offered the Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook (which I'll abbreviate here as the UMMC) -- described as "over 70 recipes inspired by the kitchens, bars, and restaurants seen on Mad Men" -- I figured that it might be a fun romp in the TV show's setting. Which it is. But to my happy surprise, this is a good cookbook even if you never watched single episode.

The UMMC is essentially a "retro" cookbook, bringing us back to the cooking and recipes of the early 1960s, which for some of us is a certain kind of comfort food: an era of upside-down pineapple cakes and Swedish meatballs and rumaki. Every recipe is presented in the context of a specific episode (the chocolate cake Sally makes for the dinner served in "Red in the Face," Season 1 Episode 7, when Don brings home Roger for dinner without warning Betty), and then some history about the dish (okay, less so about cocoa fudge cake, but the book discusses when Mai Tais came to be for instance), and then a 1960s-vintage recipe (this cake is adapted from the Betty Crocker's New Boys and Girls Cookbook from 1965). Some are "home cooking," like turkey tetrazzini; others are food eaten or mentioned at the restaurants where the characters eat, such as two versions of the Waldorf salad or oysters as they'd be served at the Grand Central Oyster Bar in 1961.

It isn't all "find cool old cookbooks." The authors went to quite some lengths for authenticity, learning that the yellow drink that Pete Campbell drinks at the Beverly Hills Hotel is a Royal Hawaiian, which was fashionable in the 50s and 60s but hasn't been served for decades -- and the hotel provided the recipe. (It has rum, pineapple juice, papaya juice, Myer's dark rum, a maraschino cherry, and a slice of fresh pineapple). As you'd expect, the UMMC has a lot of cocktails, but it also has appetizers (such as a classic shrimp cocktail); salads (Carla's potato salad); main courses (Lutece Gamabas au Beurre d'Escargot, Sal's spaghetti and meatballs); and desserts and sweets. Unlike some retro cookbooks which make me glad we grew up, these are all really good recipes, or at least "really good" in the context of the 60s (which means that you think fondly of turkey tetrazzini, I guess).

If you care about the show at all, you'll enjoy the food-meets-episode reminders. Even if you don't, you'll be tempted to throw a Mad Men dinner. I know *I* am thinking of doing so!

An aside: If you like this kind of "retro" cookbook but don't want the Mad Men baggage (and if you didn't care for the show I imagine it could get tiresome) you ought to check out Arthur Schwartz's New York City Food: An Opinionated History and More Than 100 Legendary Recipes, which scratches much of the same itch. Schwartz's book is more all-encompassing (such as a history of and recipes from Delmonico's, an influential restaurant that hasn't been mentioned on Mad Men), so if you want the "New York" ingredients more than "This is what mom cooked for me!" that may be a better choice.

I expected this to be a bit of fluff. To my surprise, I discovered a really nice cookbook that will spend quite a bit of time on my kitchen counter rather than on a shelf.

I was looking for a 'go to' holiday gift idea and found this. The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook: Inside the Kitchens, Bars, and Restaurants of Mad Men I liked it so much I got one for myself and have already tried a few drinks and recipes. (Sardi's Hearts of Palm Salad, Gambas au Beurre d'Escargot, 21 Club Vodka Gimlet, and The Pierre Hotel Irish Coffee are household favorites!)"The Hostess with the Mostest" tidbit, which we read at our Thanksgiving table, prompted lively discussion and lots of laughs. In fact, we're planning to use it as the basis for our Christmas Eve celebration this year - great drinks, great food, great conversation! Add the beautiful photos, the Mad Men references, and the tip on having a well-stocked bar and it's a great gift for adults of all ages!
