Yet more of Gary Larson's off the wall humour for fans to enjoy. Larson's cartoons are certainly not mainstream but for anyone who loves humour that is a little bit different this book is a delight.Quirky artwork abounds as do the bizarre scenarios of Larson's world. One of the few cartoonists that can make me laugh out loud....brilliant!

This is the twelth Far Side collection (originally published in the UK in 1991 - I read the 1992 Warner Books edition) and although it starts slowly, it soon finds its rhythm and includes some real gems. There’s also a great little joke on the “other books…” page, where ‘Moby Dick’ has an apparently hand-drawn line through it. Of the panels themselves, my favourites included “Big Bob’s Ballbearings, Bananas, Roller Skates & Floor Wax inc.”, “The Dam Bursts” (the fall out when you put a Migraine studies institute next door to a Marching Bands school), Dog names, “You never see it coming…” (a man gets run over by the ‘old age truck’), the Click Beetle (serves Kyle right really), the Institute for the study of emotional stress (“Hey, I feel better already!) and two bystanders ruining the funniest cartoon ever. There’s also a five-page, double-spread colour section detailing the evolution of life on earth and some of the incidental details (such as Fred Flintstone) are superb. Brilliantly done, great fun to read and highly recommended.

Laugh your thorax off! 18 Feb 2003
By KNO2skull - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
How does one write a review for a Gary Larson book? With an example: if you've ever laughed so hard at a cartoon that you burst your second stomach, be prepared to do it again. Gary Larson's cartoons are strange humor, brilliant, and sometimes gives people dangerous belly-laughs. This book is themed around animals, (including people, (including cave people)) and space aliens. There is a short series of great color paintings in the center, depicting the various ages of life on Earth, including the hilarious "Age of Invertebrates", to the future world where Gary predicts cows will be the dominant species. If you're not familiar with Gary, you should check out the preview and see for yourself. He is the Master, but we're not sure of what. This book is hilarious.

Why should you pick up Unnatural Selections when you have all the Galleries. Because in the center of this book you'll find, full-page in full color on glossy pages. It's the evolution of life as only Gary Larson can tell it.

Excellent anthology 11 Jun 2013
By Doug Erlandson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
"Unnatural Selection" is a fairly short (compared to the Galleries) collection of Gary Larson's cartoons. Although there's no apparent method to Larson's selection madness, the specific cartoons are (in my estimation) some of the funniest that he drew during his years of creating The Far Side. (For some reason I have always found the cartoon in which two moth couples are sitting in a living room and the female of the host "couple" is saying to her mate, "Criminy! Talk about overstaying your welcome! . . . John, open the door and turn the porch light on--see if that gets rid of them!" Maybe I like this one so much because many times I have wished we could get rid of guests in that way. Anyhow, this one and a lot of other classics are in this collection)

In addition, in the middle of this collection are full-color drawings by Larson on glossy paper of his interpretation of evolution. They include the Age of Invertebrates, the Age of Fish and Amphibians, the Age of Reptiles, the Age of Birds and Mammals, and the Future. (So as not to spoil it I won't say anything about the inhabitants of the future as Larson envisions it.) Each of these five is a detailed and hilarious drawing of the characteristics of the inhabitants of the age. This feature in itself makes the "Unnatural Selection" collection worth having.

Bizarre at it's Best! 15 Jan 2007
By Tell Me A Story - Published on Amazon.com

I love Gary Larson because there are no Sacred Cows that he won't barbecue. Which is a perfect sequeway into one cartoon in this book. A rebellious teenage cow comes home wearing leather, thankfully his wise mother tells others that to ignore him it's just a phase!

I have had friends desert me in card shops when I read Gary Larson's cards. If you are a fan, this is a must have!
