Product Description

The name Jack the Ripper conjures up vivid images, of fogbound Victorian alleyways where a sinister figure stalks the night in search of his unsuspecting prey. His name is famous throughout the world, and yet nobody knows for certain who he was, or even what became of him. This truly atmospheric drama/documentary is a journey back to 1888 when the Whitechapel Murderer s reign of terror sent waves of revulsion and horror coursing through Victorian London. Best selling author Richard Jones (History Channel and From Hell DVD Documentary) takes the viewer on a journey with the Victorian Police as they race against time to catch the murderer before he kills again. Interviews with leading Ripper expert Paul Begg and historian Lindsay Siviter deliver the latest accurate information concerning this fascinating case... The highlight of this exhaustively researched dramatised film is the revelation by several of the leading detectives who investigated the case that Jack the Ripper was in fact caught and was later identified by the one person who ever saw the murderer. Unmasking the Ripper features a revealing and exclusive interview with a mysterious 83-year old lady who may well be a blood descendent of the Ripper himself. So join the experts for a tour de force through mystery, intrigue and terror, that twists its way through the darker recesses of the Victorian metropolis, where every step taken brings you a little closer to solving the world s greatest murder mystery.

I always like to read about new ideas of who jack the ripper was , even though I belive we will never find out.
This is dvd does not consider all the suspects it only considers one and its not a new one.
Having said that I found this to be a well presented program which did't over complicate the facts and paid attention to details a lot leave out.
The presenters consider facts of the case in an unbaised way without putting their own spin on it, to many soultions I have seen have been obessed with their own ideas without giving creedence to others.
I really enjoyed watching this dvd and though it well worth the money, should you buy it, I hope you enjoy it as well.

Dear review readers,
I keep on hearing the so called experts have found out who I was, they look so clever and talk about being on the right track....

I have laughed about the amateurisch appearance of the dvd but remember: Don't judge a book by it's cover....
especially if you've got an old diary in your hand....haha.

I am down on documentairies and I shant quit watching them till I'm completely satisfied.
This dvd is so interesting and fascinating, I want to watch it again and again

Grand work this documentary is. It was very nice and gives a good insight in the Victorian London of the 1880's.

The next time I shall send a copy of this dvd to Detective F.G. Abberline, just for jolly.
He'd love this funny little dvd and it's conclusions..haha..

Too bad they unmasked the wrong person.
They blame it all on Kosminski, the poor soul. Just because he was seen hitting Elsie Stride and let's face it;
That's what he was known for....beating up women.haha.
Unfortunately for him, he'd been recognised by this laddy, a mister Schwartz.
Anyway it was very convenient for me, as I could easily wait in the shadows until she was left alone.

Interesting to see how Aaron's looks have improved immensely
Before this documentary Kosminski looked like a dirty ugly tramp. Now he's a handsome young lad.

Congratulations for blaming a journalist for the writings of my legendary letters.
Don't worry, for it's alright.
Even though I dare to state that the press are just as guilty and responsible for the deaths of harmless innocent people as I am.

I hope that someday my name will be known..
It's a good thing they couldn't get an eyewitness account from a horse, cause he's really the only one who saw me after I'd done Lizz.
And thank God, it wasn't mister Ed the talking horse, now was it....haha

Maybe they will get my true identity right next time.

Until then....,

Yours truly,

I've used the Whitechapel murders as a case study for my students for a number of years. Specifically, I've wanted them to appreciate the impact of public opinion and media coverage on matters of crime and deviance, as well as issues relating to gender and class. I've been on the look-out for a good documentary to use as a teaching resource but there seems to be something about the Ripper case that encourages the production of poor factual programmes, ranging from the pretentious to the preposterous. I have been using a DVD called Jack The Ripper Conspiracies [DVD] [2003] which manages to be both; particular low points are the Nosferatu-like figure they have wandering around the London Dungeon and the strangled pseudo-English accent of the narrator. I sent for a copy of Unmasking Jack The Ripper [DVD] after enduring another hour and a half of bootleg Starkey, more in hope than genuine expectation. The DVD took three weeks to arrive (Thank you Amazon for keeping me updated and being appropriately contrite) but the wait was more than worth it - this straightforward, serious and authoritative handling of the case is a revelation. All the salient points are there but none of the conspiracy theories; most importantly, from my point of view, the Whitechapel murders are put succinctly and effectively in both their social and police procedural contexts. I learned details of the investigation that I had never come across elsewhere and although we still have the more or less mandatory re-enactments, including unfeasably attractive Whitechapel prostitudes and glimpses of top hats and opera cloaks in the fog, they never detract from the gravitas of an informative and convincing discussion of the case. The DVD also has a refreshing lack of voyeuristic post-mortem images; we never see the fate of Mary Kelly and the narrative is none the worse for it. I may be a little biased because the various experts come to the same conclusion as me about the likely identity of Jack the Ripper - he was, of course....................
