I saw the Soul Rebels on Jools Holland's show and absolutely loved their performance. If you haven't seen how they do it live, I'd strongly recommend watching the show on You Tube to fully understand what this band is really about. It was one of the best live performances I've seen in ages and this album, "Unlock Your mind" is probably the best album I've bought all year. I've loved the Colman Brothers album and Trombone Shorty's Backatown, but for sheer fun value, this is hard to beat.
The Soul Rebels are 8 talented, college trained musicians that perform in the round - 7 horn players and a percussionist. They sing, they rap, they dance and they bang those drums and blow those horns like you wouldn't believe. Whether it's a well chosen cover - the fantastic re-imagining of "Sweet Dream are made of this", the Stevie Wonder original "Living For The City" or one of their own compositions, every song on this album is upbeat, optimistic and full of joy.
The real genius of this recording is that the band have managed to capture the magic that happens when they play live on a CD. It's a party - and not some naff UK club night in a dodgy town center cattle market either. I'm talking about a party in some steaming Mardi Gras bar where the band mix it up between rap, soul, funk and jazz and the whole place is caught up in the music and the moment. This really is 5 star music. Excellent in every respect.
