THE 2011 BEST-SELLER

“Takes you on a journey into the darkest recesses of the human mind.”

“Brilliant, fast paced...a book that gets you hooked from the first page.”

Usually a serial killer will have a modus operandi that can lead to their capture. This one is breaking all the rules.

It takes a journalist's keen eye to grasp the terrifying truth. This killer is recreating infamous murders from history. Despite researching historical murders in an attempt to catch the killer in the act, the police are repeatedly outwitted. With the Jack the Ripper murders next on the agenda, a bloodbath seems inevitable.

With the clock ticking and the killer becoming increasingly frenzied, a detective and criminal psychologist join forces to stop this unlikely killer.

From the Publisher

A taut and edgy thriller that will keep you guessing till the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! 10 Mar 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This has to be one of the best books I've read in a long time - one of those you don't forget easily, and can't put down until you finish. The plot draws you in and then takes you on a ride which is both thrilling and gruesome at the same time. You are privy to both the mind of the killer and the main policeman's, but the identity of the killer is never telegraphed in advance. The end was so shocking and surprising, I had to go back a few pages and read them again, to make sure I hadn't made a mistake. Along the way there are small side stories going on including the state of the policeman's marriage and family life, the way this case impacts on it - all of which knit together brilliantly, but do not detract from the main story, which is the manhunt for this dreadful killer. I'd never heard of this writer before, but I shall be looking for them again, after reading this un-put-downable book. Don't think about it - buy it - you won't regret it.

4.0 out of 5 stars MIXED EMOTIONS 14 May 2012
By Carol 'avid little bookworm' TOP 500 REVIEWER

I read my first book by Ricki Thomas, Hope's Vengeance, a month ago. It was absolutely a 5* read and I therefore couldn't wait to read this novel.

Well, Unlikely Killer, just like Hope's vengeance, had me hooked from the minute I picked it up. I quite literally couldn't put it down reading late into the night - telling myself 'just one more chapter'!

There are so many characters you can't let your concentration lapse for even a second, a challenge I like. Just as with Hope's Vengeance the plot has many facets, which I feel only a talented writer could pull together.

So why only 4*s? Well I really thought I'd be giving 5*, as all the way through, right up to the finish, I couldn't put this book down, it was thrilling. But, coming to the end the coincidences just began stacking up too much to be feasible to my mind and I had a pretty good idea what the ending would hold (although this could have been from remarks I'd read in other reviews).

However, this would not put me off reading other Ricki Thomas novels as she is an extremely talented writer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wish I Could Give It More 30 July 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Having read a lot of reviews about this book, I agree with a lot of points already made.
The good points first. This is a great story and I havent read a book like it for a long time. It definately starts as a cannot put down book and this continues for over half of the story. The main characters are well described and easy to associate with and each main event is documented in detail.
Then the bad points. As mentioned previously by contributors, far too many murders drag the book from a realistic thriller to fantasy. It just becomes too much. Whilst I appreciate fiction, I do expect this sort of book to stay realistic and I just dont think this is in the end.
I do accept that police officers make mistakes but there is no way I can believe that this killer cold have been at large as long as in this book in the real world.
Other reviewers are correct to point out that murders on motorways and that amount of credit card use just doesnt go undetected like this.
I also cant accept how certain characters just happen to be targets of the killer near the end. Its just a bit too far feteched for me.
If it was a couple of murders shorter and a bit more life realistic, this book would be a definate four stars if not five.
Unlike some reviewers who refer to the main characters marriage sub plot being unecessary, I would have actually preferred less murder and more of that. Kreins relationship with his wife and daughter are hardly mentioned in the first half of the book and then it becomes a focal point of the story. I think I would have liked to have had more of that relationship.
