Judas Priest - British Steel 30th Anniversay Edition

Biography

Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine & Greg Prato
Judas Priest was one of the most influential heavy metal bands of the '70s, spearheading the New Wave of British Heavy Metal late in the decade. Decked out in leather and chains, the band fused the gothic doom of Black Sabbath with the riffs and speed of Led Zeppelin, as well as adding a vicious two-lead guitar attack; in doing so, they set the pace… Read more in Amazon's Judas Priest Store

I first purchased this album when it came out on vinyl back in 1980. I've heard it said that it should be re-named "Unleashed In The Studio" because various trickery has gone on with the mixing. I don't care! This is a fantastic album to listen to. The same criticism was levelled at Thin Lizzy's "Live and Dangereous" and that is the only other live rock album that comes close to this one.
The remastering process has breathed new life into the sound quality - it is superb. Those twin lead guitars of Glenn and KK raise the hairs on the back of your neck like never before. Halfords vocals soar without wanting to make your ears bleed.
The bonus tracks are not padding either. However, here is my only negative point.
My original vinyl copy came with a free 3 track EP which had the epic "Beyond The Realms of Death" on. While I love the extra Cd tracks of "Delivering The Goods" and "Starbreaker" they cannot make up for the loss of this classic track. It's omission also makes the album light on tracks from the "Stained Class" album.

Personally, I don't think Priest have bettered this album. I'm probably in a minority here because I don't like any of the Priest stuff after "British Steel".

Buy all their early stuff and start with this!!

Listened to this album on cd the other night and there is no doubt about it has to be one of the best, if not the best live album on record, the others being Scorpions's Tokyo Tapes and Thin Lizzy's Live and dangerous.

Recorded on the killing machine tour of Japan 1978, Unleashed is a refreshing and adrenaline pumping listen all the way through and is a great showcase of an extraodinary live metal band at their peak. The selection of classic songs are played much faster and are much more energetic than the studio cuts, the twin axe attack of tipton and downing has never been better and Halford really is at the top of his game here, hitting high note after high note without having to think about it.

I first bought this album on vinyl back in the early 80's and it sounds better than ever on cd now, back then you got a free 7" single with bonus tracks rock forever, hell bent for leather and beyond the realms of death. On this cd there is unfortunately no beyond the realms which is a great shame as it is one of their best songs, the cd gives you the 2 aforementioned tracks plus delivering the goods and starbreaker in place of beyond the realms, 2 great songs but I know which track I'd rather have. However, this is a minor criticism as this truly is a must have cd for anyone even remotely into metal, it doesnt get much better than this!

This is a cracking album, Victim Of Changes is an awsome studio song but when Rob sings it live it is unbelievable, he can sure hit those high notes. I strongly urge people to buy this. They have just done all the classics so buy this and im sure you will enjoy it.
