'Unknown' is Mari Jungstedt's third novel featuring Detective
Superintendent Anders Knutas, and set on the Swedish island of
Gotland. It is a thorougly enjoyable read.
The plot gets under way when a horse is found decapitated
in a field, its head having been taken away.Whilst the police
are investigating ,a young female student working on an
archaeological dig for Viking artifacts is found dead, hanging
from a tree with her stomach stabbed.Neither the police enquiries,
nor the investigations of the journalist,Johan, seem to be making
progress--as further ritualistic crimes come to light--until the
final denouement.
The author's sparing style ,descriptions of Gotland and its
Viking connections, together with details of some of the characters'
lives, give a vivid sense of place and add to the enjoyment.
Jungstedt is a singular interesting writer, and I am glad that
there are more novels in this series.
