Book Description

1 Jan 2010

It's summer on Gotland and an international group of archaeology students are excavating an ancient Viking site. The camaraderie and holiday spirits of the group are shattered when one of their number, a Dutch student called Martina, disappears. Rumours abound about a secret relationship she was having with someone on the island, but is her disappearance simply a lover's intrigue?

When the body of a horse is discovered in a local farmer's field, other rumours begin to circulate. The horse had been decapitated and the head has vanished.

As Inspector Knutas begins his investigation, echoes from Gotland's Viking past begin to trouble his search. When Martina's naked body is found hanging from a tree, with what look like ritualistic markings on her skin, there can be little further question. Someone is calling to the old Gods of Gotland. Martina has been killed according to the Viking ritual of the three-fold death, and the one thing the ritual points to is that more deaths will follow.

Review

Jungstedt delivers excellent clammy atmosphere and a constant premonition of weird deaths to come. She's becoming one of Scandinavia's best crime writers, no mean compliment in a crowded field. (The Times )

Inspector Knutas returns in a gripping new novel, perfect for fans of Henning Mankell.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mari Jungstedt---Unknown 30 Jan 2009
By Simon Clarke TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
'Unknown' is Mari Jungstedt's third novel featuring Detective
Superintendent Anders Knutas, and set on the Swedish island of
Gotland. It is a thorougly enjoyable read.
The plot gets under way when a horse is found decapitated
in a field, its head having been taken away.Whilst the police
are investigating ,a young female student working on an
archaeological dig for Viking artifacts is found dead, hanging
from a tree with her stomach stabbed.Neither the police enquiries,
nor the investigations of the journalist,Johan, seem to be making
progress--as further ritualistic crimes come to light--until the
final denouement.
The author's sparing style ,descriptions of Gotland and its
Viking connections, together with details of some of the characters'
lives, give a vivid sense of place and add to the enjoyment.
Jungstedt is a singular interesting writer, and I am glad that
there are more novels in this series.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good solid crime novel 30 Jan 2012
By Dyane
Format:Paperback
This is my first novel by Jungstedt, and I enjoyed it very much. What I do love about these Scandinavian novels is the backdrop, and they way they describe it, I can imagine the frosty and extreme weather conditions that they describe and it always makes me feel warm living in these (cold) conditions of N Ireland. However this novel is set in summer so I had to contend with Inspector Knutas gettin hot and sticky instead. Jungstedt, please bring back the cold conditins that I love about Scandinavia as I feel that it gives the story much more atmosphere.

This story starts with a group of archeologists working on the dig of a viking settlement when one of the team gets murdered. Inspector Knutas and his team are to investigate however as the case progresses it appears that this is no ordinary murder but has the feel of a ritualistic killing. Before long another murder is added to the pile.

Overall this was an enjoyable read and I'm off to read the next Inspector Knutas installment, 'The Killer's Art'.

NB. Readers should be aware that this novel also goes by the name of 'The Inner circle'.

I have enjoyed all of Mari's books so far and again await the next one in the series. She brings to life the island of Gotland.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average crime novel which feels rather tired 27 July 2010
By Roman Clodia TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
In Gotland, Sweden, two little girls are desolated when their horse is killed and decapitated; elsewhere a Dutch archaeology student goes missing then is found ritually murdered - but what's the connection between the two crimes... and who will be next?

This is the first Jungstedt I have read and, like some other reviewers, I found it disappointing. On one hand there's lots of unnecessary padding (Johan's relationship with his girlfriend and their new baby, in particular) that distracts from the main story; yet on the other, the story feels very linear and simple, lacking any richness in either writing or characterisation.

The interspersed narratives of the unnamed `he' following the perpetrator feels very tired and the whole effort feels rather unenthusiastic.

So not a terrible book overall but distinctly lacking in anything to lift it above the run of the mill and commonplace.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unknown 8 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
I came across this book by accident and, being an avid reader of Scandinavian and Icelandic crime novels, I ordered it. I enjoyed the book and ordered other books by Mari Jungstedt from my local library - I read all three of her books in less than a week.
I found the book well written and easy to read. Have given up on American crime fiction where there seems to be so much going on that I have to keep going back to check just what did happen.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hope the next book is better 14 Aug 2010
By Jomodu
Format:Paperback
I have just finished reading this over a three-week period - having left it and read another book before returning to it. I found it somewhat uninspiring, boring and meandering - the main reason for leaving it half read. It got even worse in my opinion when I came back to finish it. The end was so rushed that I think the author was as fed-up as me in the end. I didn't mind the love story bit which, although totally unlinked to the plot, was interesting in its own way. I quite like unrelated side-stories and this worked well in the last book of the blockbuster Millenium trilogy (eg poison pen emails etc).
Even so, I don't think that Mari hits the spot in her books when trying to flesh out her characters - many of the other writers in this genre are quite successful and better at this as it makes for a good read by mixing work and domestic to draw out the character.
I am looking forward with some degree of trepidation to the latest book as I enjoyed Mari's first two books - although I do class them in the same group for gloominess as some of the other currenty popular Scandinavian crime writers. Only three stars though and lucky at that really.
