Biography

On the day Garbage gathered in Wisconsin to start work on their fourth record, they came up with the glittering and steely "Right Between the Eyes" in all of 30 minutes. Things would not go quite so well with BLEED LIKE ME again.

The band battled illness, surgery, creative disagreements, major life changes and-depending who you ask-either a break-up or a much-needed sabbatical. ... Read more in Amazon's Garbage Store

All right, the song is very good after listening to it for a couple of times, but the real jem here is the FANTASTIC CLUB-TASTIC remix by BIR, one of my favorite remixers ever!! Is it incredibly loud and super-pumpoing and will have get up and dance.
Very prog-gish, kinda like their mix of Kylie's Too Far, but much more beating. You have to get this one, I couldn'y believe my ears!!!!!!!

The third commercial release from Beautifulgarbage, the third album from Garbage, comes a single available in 3 cds. Three cutting edge remixes from 3 established artists Brothers in Rhythm, Timo Maas & Eli Janey and three new songs, Happiness Part 2, Confidence & Candy Says, a Velvet Underground cover. Great!
But a three star rating from myself is all I can give for this wishy-washy song.
Whilst maintaining Garbage's distinct sound and innovative beats, and a clear nod to the sound of old, this song is disappointing. Garbage's "Grab-you-by-the-wotsits" attitude that they became so famous for is lost here and further emphasised by a format overload on CD.
As a long term Garbage fan, I will definitely be buying all three singles. I have collected every other one to date and these will be of no exception. To the hardcore fans, these singles have to be part of your collection; otherwise can you really call yourself a fan? The Timo Maas Remix I have heard twice now, and is definitely a commercial breakthrough, and it will be in all the clubs. "Energetic" and "surreal" are definitely words de jour.
But Garbage could have done so much better, although Shirley's voice is on top form. I feel that they have sold out for a commercial release, with the album as a whole and this is no different. The lyrics-by-numbers vibe to the song means they have fallen into a horrible rut, neither cutting edge nor commercial. And whilst this single will sell loads and top the indie chart, it will never do for Garbage what the album "version 2.0" did for them and establish them as artists of their time and genre.

BUTG 25 May 2002

Breaking up the girl is Garbage's 3rd single from their album Beautifulgarbage. The song is really great but the only thing you get with this cd isn't that song. There's lots of more in this single. Garbage's wonderful cover of Velvet Underground's Candy Says is also in this cd.Shirley's voice is very peaceful and touching in this song. And there's even more! The video of Breaking up the girl is also in it and the quality is perfect. If you want I can count you millions of more reasons to buy this cd!But the most important reason is Garbage is one of the best bands (the best one for me:)in the music right now and everything they've done proved this to all the fans and non-fans around the world. So buy this cd, I guarantee you, you won't be disappointed.

Another great single from Garbage 24 May 2003

Breaking Up The Girl prt.1 is a very good single. It contains the cover song "Candy Says" and a very good remix. The video is good too, but I don't understand what it has to do with the song.
All and all, I recomend it for any Garbage fan
Great song, weak CD single 31 July 2003
By Darryl Da Silva - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
"Breaking Up The Girl" is one of the few BEAUTIFULGARBAGE tracks that I don't skip past. It's a great number that should have been released as the album's first single, in my opinion. But I would save your hard-earned cash for the full album instead of "Breaking Up The Girl 1". "Candy Says" is one of Garbage's weakest B-sides, and carries an unhealthy "So Like A Rose" vibe (a song from BEAUTIFULGARBAGE which, while blah, is still better than "Candy Says"). And the techno remix of "Breaking Up The Girl" is a 10-minute snoozer. This single's saving grace is the "Breaking Up The Girl" video, rendered in high video and sound quality. If you're a hardcore fan, pick "Breaking Up The Girl 1" up....but otherwise, steer clear.
"I've come to hate my body..." 4 April 2008

Breaking Up the Girl part 1 by Garbage is a great import. Breaking Up the Girl is an intelligent and honest song and there's a cover of The Velvet Underground's goregous but subtle, Candy Says. Shirley's emotion on this track is just breathtaking, this gal can sing anything! I highly recommend this little but important purchase.
