Product Description

CD Description

'Universe In Reverse' is the second album by frenetic dancerock band Infadels. Known for their energetic live shows and recordings, the band head in a slightly rockier direction with the help of producer Martin 'Youth' Glover (Guns 'n' Roses, Depeche Mode). Melodic, cinematic and urgent this record highlights the many depths and talents of a group realising their potential. Includes the single 'Make Mistakes'.

3.0 out of 5 stars Half a decent album .....half a load of windy bluster, 30 Jun 2008
By russell clarke "stipesdoppleganger" (halifax, west yorks) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
There's nothing wrong with a rousing volley of anthem fuelled indie/rock dance crossover .For instance I thoroughly enjoyed last years Simian Mobile Disco album and I get the distinct impression from listening to Universe In Reverse that this is the type of thing Infadels are after. A bit of Hard Fi, a smidgeon of Primal Scream , a smattering even of the Kaiser Chiefs or maybe The Zutons ... I would mention Razorlight or The Fratelli,s but that would be insulting.
Universe in Reverse , their sophomore release , certainly has plenty of energy and so it should as it was recorded in a 14 day burst . Infadels are the sort of band I can imagine going do a storm live. They create an impressive racket of flaying guitars, pounding bass and errr pounding drums with odd little stylistic nuances thrown in. Swooshing keyboards on "Make Mistakes" , the pulsing underlying rhythms on "Free Things For Poor People" .Lyricist and vocalist Bnann is suitably unswerving in his approach though his lyrics can be rather trite .
What the album really lacks are the towering songs needed to truly carry it off . "Play Blind" is thoroughly energising and the scouring tendrils of guitar on the chorus are a great touch but it never ignites like it should. "Circus Of The Mad" sounds like a would be terrace anthem but is just irritating ."Code 1" is the best thing on here with a genuine pulsing electro arrangement and "A Million Pieces" sounds like it will go stratospheric but actually goes the other way for the chorus. Indeed thinking about that a bit more it's actually a neat trick.
The title track is a bit of would be profound bluster and while I'm the first to demand variety in an album normally , the peripatetic drones of "Don't Look Behind You" seem out of place -though it's actually a nice song. "Chemical Girlfriend" is a more straight up pop song with harmonies for gods sake -again nicely done leading into the jagged edged "How To Disappear" which scurry's around in the search for a decent tune.
Half this album is thoroughly enjoyable but the other half just gets in the way but that's what the skip button is for I suppose. To truly stand out playing this type of music you have to have tunes that would cause the leaning tower of Pisa to bend the other way to catch a listen or be so sonically vociferous that the leaning tower would bend so far the other way to escape it would finally topple over. It may make more sense live, and perhaps producer Martin Glover should have gone for a more natural animate sound , but as it is Universe In Reverse won't be responsible for any towers toppling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome awesomness!, 17 Jul 2008
By Abacus Riley (Rugeley, UK) - See all my reviews
One of the true undiscovered gems of the UK, by all rights the Infadels should be living in gold plated towers following the genius of their debut "We Are Not The Infadels". However, for them it was not to be, so now out of seemingly nowhere is "Universe In Reverse".

This new record sees them ditch the day-glo and head in more of an Arcade Fire direction ("Free Things For Poor People") mixed with the atmospherics of a band like Spiritulized ("Don't Look Behind You"). While first listen leaves you feeling a bit bemused on their new style you find yourself revisiting the best moments and eventually the whole album.

Showing they can turn creative corners with such ease shows great promise in Infadels. With any luck those gold towers are being built right now.
