1.0 out of 5 stars A failed attempt to update a classic deck 19 Oct 2012
By Josh D.
Format:Cards
For whatever reason the Lo scarabeo editors got a licence to re-arrange the old Oswald Wirth Tarot Deck.
A shame since it was a perfect transition between the Marseilles and the Rider Waite.
This revised version, released during the 2000s ( many decades after Mr Wirth's death) was "modernized" in a very childish, new age way, making cards like the Fool, The Hermit and the Magician seem like from a post-1990s-manga type of illustration.
The element correspondences for the minor arcana seem acceptable, associating the fire with the seasons and wheat, the pentacles with earth and the planets. The air element with wind and clouds. The usage of butterflies with the Cups is cute but I'm not sure how justifiable it is in symbolical terms. The worst part is the use of animal heads in many cards where other tarots don't ( even a dog head was thrown in there). It seems it was more for aesthetic reasons than grounded on symbolic meaning.
The perspective and dimensions of the drawings are specially obnoxious in the court cards, where they are mostly out of proportion regarding the space and size. In the King of Pentacles half of the pentacle he holds doesn't appear. ( much like a wrongly centered photograph).
I consider it disrespectful of the classic Wirth Tarot which sadly seems out of print and these opportunists, so-called artists ( amateur at best regarding the drawings) took advatage of this abusing the old name and only adding the word Universal. I blame whomever sold the rights or permitted this. Fortunately it's not happening with many old Tarot decks ( perhaps it is that most old Tarots have people/editors protecting the rights of the great original decks, but in the case of this one has been forgotten or in the hands of people who don't care?

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful art but confusing pips 23 April 2009
By Donovan Day - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Cards
The Universal Wirth deck is beautifully colored with a modern touch to the illustrations we all know from the original Oswald Wirth Tarot. The Hermit is a highlight for me along with the Emperor. great faces with emotion and figures that are both lifelike and comic-book at the same time. This deck has a great color scheme and the art flows wonderfully. Every card fits in with the whole.
The big problem for me is a simple one. I'm so used to seeing Swords as air and Cups as water, so this deck is hard for me to read with since they are reversed here. I understand the history of such interpretation, but can't get past the fact that it's the opposite of the way I view the cards. For instance most cups in this deck have a butterfly motif on the Cup itself and butterflies and birds and nice blue skies as a focal point. The Sword cards contain waves, pools, the ocean, fish, lobsters etc. You get my point.
All in all, this is one of the more beautiful decks out there. If you are looking for fantastic art and a modern take on a historical deck, then by all means pick it up. However, if you are like me and typically interpret the minor arcana as Wands/fire, Pentacles/earth, Cups/water, Swords/air, and you think it may be difficult to get around this in a reading, think again before you buy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too confusing for a beginner... or expert! 29 May 2012
By Bogus Exception - Published on Amazon.com

Confusion is an understatement...

From my blog: "The Chalices/Cups suit, which SHOULD be Water, have been confused for Air (as you'd already guessed), with the theme being butterflies (I'm not kidding) throughout, sprinkled with eagles. The Coins are treated properly as earth, and the Wands I like the best. Not only are the Wands almost always shown on fire (like they should), but on the 3 of wands you get a head shot of what is apparently the owner's Labrador Retriever. I wish I was kidding. I'd love to hear from anyone regarding how they can possibly divinate with a straight face using this deck..."

Oh, and for those of you saying that "It's no problem switching them around, as this is in the style of some Spanish school of thought", I would point out that the LWB gave all traditional interpretations.

I'll try to add pictures to the product page so you can see what I mean... It is NOT a slight difference.

Oh, and since it's Lo Scarebo the paper is of fair/poor quality. Not to worry, this deck won't get worn out.
4.0 out of 5 stars beautiful 10 April 2013

this deck is simply beautiful, confusing but fresh ideas and meaning. it goes along with contemplative tarot. again the only complain is the booklets. lo scarabeo decks are great but when it comes to the booklets aghhh hate it. i mean few little pages for such a deep tarot? anyway the deck is amazing evrn though they havd the sword as emotion and cups as mental. still love it, its fresh idea and worth to give it a thought.
