Universal Soldier Luc Deveraux is back. Jean-Claude Van Damme gallantly attempts to resurrect interest in his tepid career with this action-riddled roller-coaster ride. Set in the not-too-distant future, Deveraux has been employed by the government to oversee the new UniSol project. What is UniSol? It's a military plan to turn dead soldiers into invincible fighting machines (see the first Univeral Soldier for more details). It's also the scheme that went horribly wrong when the soldiers turned psycho, killing the scientists who created them. Not deterred by this early setback, the government replicates the project. This time they work out that they can control the soldiers through a supercomputer called SETH (kind of like HAL in 2001, but smarter). But, as we all know, machines frequently break down. Pretty soon the computer comes to the conclusion that it's superior to humans and therefore it must destroy them. Uh oh.

Van Damme to the rescue. The muscles from Brussels heroically leap into action confronting the dangerous soldiers led by Bill (WCW) Goldberg and Michael Jai White (last seen in Spawn). The action is impressive and the stunts are engrossing. Goldberg is charismatic as the cartoonish villain who sneers and snouts while muttering macho things like, "I'm gonna kill that guy." Van Damme looks more at home in a production that he is not directing, and for once he lets his fists do the talking. Ironically, the movie is missing the gloss and big-budget pathos of its predecessor (created by Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich), making the original decidedly better. -- Jeremy Storey, Amazon.com

3.0 out of 5 stars A Good Quality B-Movie 9 Sep 2010
Format:DVD
Universal Solder - The Return, is the second theatrical film in the Universal Soldier franchise. Although, not included in the Universal Soldier continuity with the recent release of Universal Soldier Regeneration [DVD] [2009], this is still a very watchable film, whilst clearly being a B Movie.

The film itself has been produced on a much smaller budget than the original, Universal Soldier [DVD] [1991], which in my opinion adds to this films appeal. Due to not being able to pack the film with big budget special effect explosions, the film relies on more martial arts skills and also on more inter character dialogue as well which gives this film more depth than the average B Movie.

Included on the DVD alongside the movie there are also some very interesting interviews with Jean-Claude VanDamme and Michael Jai White in the special features which combined with the very cheap price of this product, gives this film an excellent value for money.

Overall, whilst the film clearly won't win any awards, it is very watchable and will be of interest to any Jean-Claude VanDamme fan, action movie fan or someone who wants a cheap and enjoyable evening alone or amongst friends.

3.0 out of 5 stars Further adventures of Unisol 24 Mar 2013
Format:Blu-ray
This 1999 film concerns further attempts to improve the Universal Soldiers assisted by a new super computer. Luc Deveraux as played by Claude Van Damme who managed to survive the original program by coming back from the dead is back as a technical expert. Things go awry and its up to Devereux to save the day.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of Van Damme's best acted roles. 15 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
In the sequel to the original Universal Soldier, which was a box office hit, Jean-Claude Van Damme makes his return as now devoted father and widower Luc Deveraux, he is now a technical expert on the new unisols project, but it all goes wrong when the computer (S.E.T.H) decides to take over the Unisols project, as he knows the goverment can not afford to keep the project going which would mean destruction of SETH. But for SETH to do this he need's a password, which only Luc Deveraux knows, how ever mayhem breaks lose, and Van Damme has to battle the unisols which are 2.5 stronger than any man to stop SETH. In which I think this was some of Van Damme's best acting in the film, Michael Jai White as the body and voice of SETH, was very good, his vocal skills were used well in the film, and other roles played by WCW Star Bill Goldberg was impressive, he looks very charismatic on screen, and pulled off his role of the bad guy brilliantly. There are good fight scene's in the movie as well, mostly towards the end, the best being Luc Deveraux(Van Damme) v SETH (Michael Jai White) they both show some great kicks in this fight and is enjoyable to watch. All in all this movie is a great sequel to the original Universal Soldier, it may not be as good as the first, but there is plenty of action in the film, so I give it the thumbs up.
