5.0 out of 5 stars A wealth of recondite knowledge, 18 Oct 2005
By A Customer
Whilst the Merriam Webster crossword dictionary is my first choice when seeking help, I always have Ursula Harringman's to hand. It is quirky but delightful. You may look up a perfectly simple word and perhaps not find it, but look up something unusual and it is almost certain to be there.I open a page at random and find the sequence: "Philtre, Phineus, Phlegm, Phoca, Phocian city, Phoebad, Phoenicia (a number of variant entries here), Phonetic" etc. The compiler seems more interested in the offbeat than the ordinary and this is what gives this dictionary its charm - and also its great usefulness.

1.0 out of 5 stars Universal Crossword Dictionary, 11 Jun 2009
By Mrs. K. P. Claridge - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I purchased this book by mistake , intending to buy the Complete Crossword Dictionary by the same author. I have had for many years a copy of the Complete Crossword Dictionary and needed to replace it, but found the Universal Crossword Dictionary to be a very poor relation. Although written by the same author, it lacked so much that the C.C.Dictionary contained. So at the moment I am coping with a dog-eared old crossword dictionarywhich has fallen into four parts, but is much loved.
