I got this book after using Unity for a month. I like the clear and structured approach it takes. You follow the route of making a simple game and learn as it reaches completion. I wish I had got this book when I first started using Unity as it would have made things a little easier. However, it does not really go into any great depth - as I am sure it was not designed to - so if you have fully gone through all the tutorials and made a few games already then I would question its value to you. However, if you are completely new to Unity then consider it a very good purchase. This is not saying there are not some good things in there for people who have been using Unity for a while as there are. Recommended - but more so if you are new to Unity.

A relatively slim book that somehow manages to cover a comprehensive set of techniques that can be applied to any game. It doesn't require any previous knowledge of Unity and it teaches you concepts in the best possible way, i.e. by taking you through building a short game, where in each chapter you implement some new feature.

The author takes you through every step of the way and you'll never feel lost. He also explains very well the basics of JavaScript for Unity so if you're new to programming you'll still be able to follow and understand.

The book covers First Person movement, terrain editing, models and animations importing, collisions, instantiation of objects, audio, particle effects, GUI and menu editing and how to release the game...basically all the essential to get you started with any project. The game you end up building is basically a first person shooter so if you're looking to build something alike you'll find all the main techniques here.

It's aimed at beginners so it doesn't cover any specifically advanced technique. If a second, more advanced version is released, i'm buying it immediately.

Great work!

This book has a lot to offer the beginner Unity game developer and is well worth the price for this alone. However the book I bought was published in 2009 and is based on building a FPS game using version 2.x of Unity. I was following the book instructions using Unity 3.4.2 and found it differed especially in more advanced aspects such as using scripts. The current downloadable version of Unity is at 3.5 so possibly is even more out of step with the examples in the book. Check for a more recent publication.

By creating a lightmap to map light and dark areas on the terrain, you are also saving on processing power when the game runs, as you have already calculated part of the lighting. "e;
