If Blur had had a bigger chip on their shoulder along with an unhealthy interest in bontempis and samplers, they would have been Regurgitator. This outstanding Aussie band have been pleasing audiences in their home country for years, but I was only introduced to 'Unit Rebooted' by a native fan of theirs last year. Though at first dubious, (after all, they can sound a bit like an art school punk band) I heard third track '!(the song formerly known as)' and was sold. With one of the catchiest soultrain intros I've ever heard, the track then turns into a Numan-esque elegy to agraphobia and club aversion, damn funny in an irresistably sing-along kind of way. The band's style canot be pigeon-holed, from the dark funky pop of 'song formerly...', the electro-melancholy of 'Black Bugs' (with a chorus you could hang your coat off,) and the distincly Everlast style of 'I will lick your arsehole' (effortlessly outshining similar tracks from LimpBizkit, Papa Roache et al,) this album is for everyone, bored of the UK alt-scene, who ever accidentally caught themselves liking a Kraftwerk tune. This album blends moog cheese, electronic noodling and lo-fi acoustic licks with a surreal sense of humour that won't fail to disappoint, as in 'PolyesterGirl' - a love song from a man to his blow-up doll. Its dirty, its funky and above all, it reminds you that if you and your little sister had persevered with that multicoloured synthesiser your grandparents bought you for Xmas in 1984, you too could have had your own band!
