Book Description

10 Oct 1996
The most famous three days in military history occurred less than two hundred years ago, and they are still the most studied, and the most fascinating, for the seemingly insignificant mistakes and new tactics that changed history forever. This full-color guide to the uniforms and troop movements will make the action more real and the movements easier to follow, as you envision the Belgian countryside battles that ended Napoleon's career and changed the European political landscape for generations. Here you'll find not only maps of the battlefield and charts of troop movements, strategies, and tactics, but also the full range of personalities, weapons, and uniforms. Over 200 full-color illustrations, with detailed captions, can help you identify all ranks of combatants, from Britain, Brunswick, France, Hanover, the Netherlands, and Prussia. The paintings accurately picture the major field commanders, including the Duke of Wellington, Napoleon, and Generalfeldmarschal Bluecher, as well as the full range of fusiliers, grenadiers, voltigeurs, officers and troopers, artillery men, the rocket corps, infantrymen, and other participants. Special attention is given to the details of uniform facings, rank lace, plumes, bonnets, badges, sashes, and greatcoats -- everything necessary to re-create this decisive battle.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good value & content 21 July 1999

Typical of his other works this is a gem of a book for those wanting to visualise, model or wargame the battle. As usual there are plenty of good plates but the brief unit descriptions and as good a order of battle as there is make this a highly recommended starter into the subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scored well on choosing this one 17 July 2009
Bought as a present (obviously - would not be buying it for myself!). Recipient thought it an excellent book. Plus, he was really impressed that I managed to obtain it as it was out of stock or print at Amazon. I got a good second hand one on Marketplace.
However, I would suggest you buy this one only for people who have indicated that they are interested in the subject matter.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed 23 July 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The illustrations in this volume leave a lot to be desired. The first thing that strikes you when you open the pages is the size of these illustrations, in some case they only occupy about 50% of the page and are quite tiny and consequently lack detail. More thought should have been given to the uniform detail and less to the dramatic poses struck by some of the figures. I have the sister volume on the peninsular war which is far superior. There are many better publications out there on this period and this battle. Not recommended
