Product Description

Someone has summoned a Unicorn to a field south of Stratford-upon-Avon causing David Ash's day to go straight to hell. Now he has to confront shotgun wielding drug dealers, murderous strangers and psychotic fairies and all to find out who stole one of Oberon's personal pets. He better do it soon, or it will mean an all out conflict between The Fairy Court and The Hidden Academy. Worse, as back up all Ash can muster is a soap opera loving Welsh elf and an American Summoner who doesn't trust him one inch. This would be bad enough, but, as the mystery unravels, Ash forms a nagging suspicion that the heart of this problem lies in his own worst nightmare, the one he's been trying to forget for over a decade.

Fell upon this by chance, it is not a genre I normally read, however I am now a convert. I loved this book, the story gripped me from the start and flowed at a good pace. I like the characters and the humour. I really hope there is a sequel, and quicky!!

Great fun... 24 May 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I really enjoyed this: imaginative, clever, funny, violent and occasionally philosophical. The characters were lively, well written and interesting.

It was only let down by the poor proof reading - missing words here and there and the weird use of commas, which jarred and distracted.

However, I'm looking forward to the next one, which can't arrive soon enough for me.

Please proof read 16 Aug 2011

This is a fun story but it has been marred for me by the complete lack of care with proof reading and editing. It really isn't that hard to do - if you can't edit your own work, please consider paying someone else to do it, because it really will damage your brand and your sales. I doubt I will read the second novel because the errors in the first have spoiled the flow of the story for me too much.

The Unicorn Crisis is fairly light and fun in its own way, although it is a pale shadow of the books it follows, such as Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files. I didn't feel the world was created with particular depth, and the premise - boy, who has terrifying power he has never suspected, apprenticed to a wizard - is a little cliched. But that's not to say there isn't good stuff here, or that it wouldn't be a fun holiday read.

I suspect however that JR hasn't yet nailed his craft completely. It's one of those books you want to be able to say better things about - but the writing isn't yet that great. If he worked with a good editor who could guide him to what works and what really doesn't in his writing - or even a good impartial beta group - then I think he would turn out novels far more compelling than this. And those I'd like to see.

I enjoyed the concept behind the story but my enjoyment was marred by the appalling lack of editing and proofreading. Read more

Great read!
I had read the synopsis but still wasn't sure what to expect - but at such a low price I thought I'd give it a whirl. And I'm so glad that I did. Read more

An exciting first book.
This is an excellent opening novel in the burgeoning urban fantasy Genre. Do not be put off by the cover art or the self published label - this is every bit as good and many of the... Read more

West Midlands MAGIC!
An absolute bargain and an extremely entertaining read. A lot of self published books suffer from a flaccid middle with lots of endless running around. Not this. Read more

Spoiled by poor proof-reading.
I thoroughly enjoyed the concept, the plot, the setting, the characterisation and the style of this novel; it should have been an altogether delightful piece. Read more

Gives good elf!
There is no doubt at all that Jon Rosenberg can spin a great yarn.

I'm a sucker for modern books with a fantasy spin and it definitely plugged that gap. Read more
