as someone who's become increasingly jaded at the lack of originality, capitalization on trends, gimmick-laden songs, affected vocals, recycled 'genres,' and the 'indie folk' movement that simply [and unfortunately] refuses to go away, it's rare that a band comes along that makes me sit up straight and pay attention. chew lips, thankfully are that band.
while on the surface chew lips appear to fall in the same boat as little boots [whom i adore] and la roux [whom i enjoy], chew lips manage to separate themselves from the pack to deliver a richly rewarding and suprising emotional album. the emotion comes in large part to tig's [the erstwhile alicia huerta] magnificent vocals. at times it seems she's channeling everyone from sharleen spiteri to alison moyet to sonya aurora madan [all the while looking like scarlett johansen's more interesting little sister]. tigs knows her voice and knows how to use it. it's a joy to listen to her sing, especially on songs like 'slick' [which along with 'karen' are probably my two favorite tracks], where she makes you smile and yearn at the same time. on the other hand, songs like 'salt air,' 'karen,' 'toro' are expertly produced, ready-made dance floor stompers sans little boots' eurodisco sheen and la roux's eccentricities. it's all so perfectly crafted and hook-filled that it all seems to good to be true. luckily, it all is true.
lastly, it's pretty amazing when a band can leave their first two singles ['solo' and 'salt air'] *off the album* [it's so old school. i love it] and still produce a record as tight as 'unicorn.' it has more potential hits most bands would happy to have 3-4 albums in to their careers. so check out their website, listen to some samples and i guarantee you'll be on board the good ship chew lips.
