Being a huge SA fan since Ecliptica I was somewhat surprised (though not totally - see below) on hearing this the first few times. Where've the supersonic songs gone? Where're the double bass pedals? Where's the melody? This is a change to a more relaxed, mature and progressive style, with a bit of celtic flavour - a sprinkling of haunting keyboards and acoustic guitars. Nothing that first got me into SA, apart from Tony's great vocals, are on this CD.
Odd then that I should like it, but it's not very accessible. It's very complex in fact and takes ages to get to know, but it's well worth the effort because it's mostly excellent. Only a couple of tracks sound like inferior versions of previous songs, notably "My Dream's a Drop..." Some of the lyrics are very strong, particularly moving is "Under Your Tree". If only Dream Theater still paid that sort of attention to their lyrics.
I say I wasn't totally surprised by the style, because Winterheart's Guild and more so Reckoning Night were already heading in this direction. But the sudden drop in pace is almost as if they've hit a brick wall. This is not melodic speed metal, but some new unique identity. Although I'm giving this one 5 stars, I hope they don't fully wave goodbye to their roots with the next release, because they do it so well. For me, Reckoning Night was a happy medium and will still be my favourite.
