Book Description

8 July 2010 The Downside Ghosts. (Book 2)

The second book in this edgy urban fantasy trilogy.

If you liked the compelling characters in 50 Shades of Grey, you’ll love the Downside Ghosts series.

Chess is a fiercely independent witch and talented Debunker - working for the Church of Real Truth to exorcise ghosts and expose human liars. But she has a dark little secret that is causing her a lot of problems… a drug addiction.

Trying to catch a spectral serial killer with a fondness for his victims’ eyes is distracting Chess from her day job, and her growing attraction to Terrible is making things worse.

Life is getting too complicated and Chess must break the rules to keep her head above water.

More About the Author

Stacia Kane has been a phone psychic, a customer service representative, a bartender, and a movie theatre usher. Writing is more fun than all of them combined. She wears a lot of black, still makes great cocktails, likes to play music loud in the car, and thinks Die Hard is one of the greatest movies ever made. She believes in dragons and the divine right of kings, and is a fervent Ricardian. After almost four years living in England, she's currently outside Atlanta with her husband and their two little girls planning a return as soon as possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Outstanding 12 July 2010
I am emotionally wrung out after Unholy Magic. I don't know how Stacia Kane does it, because seriously, the main characters are people you shouldn't like. The heroine, Chess, is a promiscuous drug addicted 'church witch', her friend 'Terrible' is an enforcer for her drug dealer and her boyfriend is a gangster in a rival gang - but Stacia draws you in and makes you care about, and sympathise with, the characters.

I don't want to spoil it for anyone who is following the series, so I'll just say that this book made me cry. Several times. We learn more about the characters and get an insight into why Chess is the way she is. Her inner monologue is sometimes so heartbreaking, it was hard to listen to - I just wanted to mother this fictional character and give her a big fat hug. We learn more about Lex and my favourite character, Terrible, completely steals the show. I LOVE the interaction between Chess and Terrible - they are both very broken, jaded, people, but there is something so innocent and sweet about them when they are together.

There was a good solid (not to metion creepy) plot but, for me, some truly phenomenal character development overshadowed it in this book and the interaction between Chess and Terrible is what is I am left mulling over after finishing it. Although some people will probably be turned off by the drug use, I think Stacia handles it really well and doesn't glamourise it at all. In fact, quite the opposite.

Can't wait for book 3 - City of Ghosts

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than book one... 24 July 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
** While the main story-lines between Unholy Ghosts and UNHOLY MAGIC aren't interrelated, I'd still strongly advise starting with book one so readers can fully appreciate the characters relationships, as well as gaining an understanding to the background of 'The Church' **

Basic background info
(No major spoilers)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

In 1997 every ghost in the world raised up and killed two thirds of the population in just one week. World leaders were powerless, prayers went unanswered, resulting in every government and religion collapsing.

In this wasteland a new group rose. The Church Of Real Truth were able to imprison most of the ghosts, and the few that remain uncaptured have lost their corporeal forms.

The Church Of Real Truth is today the world's only power; there is no other government, no other faith, just The Church. They are in the process of hunting the ghosts that remain uncaptured and compensating the unlucky people being haunted. To find the ghosts the Church educates and trains witches [known as debunkers] to find and capture the ghosts, and find the fraudsters faking a haunting to try and defraud money out of the Church.

Chess is one of these debunkers, but she has baggage. She has a drug problem [read addiction]. It's a combination of her job and her 'problem' that constantly lands her in trouble; Her drug dealer bump views her as his personal churchwitch, while she is also sleeping with a rival drug dealer's enforcer; Lex [which I'm sure has nothing to do with him supplying her with free drugs].

5.0 out of 5 stars More of Stacia Kane please....... 31 July 2010

I will not add to what has already been said, I agree with all four posts, be warned though this is pretty hard to read at times, I found it upetting regarding her brutal past and cried how she was so matter of fact about the abuse & how she was convinced that she deserved it anyway, that she is tainted somehow. The most harrowing for me ah I can't tell you but I will tell you this, is when she gets stuck at a clients house. The highlight are the glimpses of purity of love that is Terrible, what a stunning complicated character you really feel for him, (Lex though I could throttle what blinkers he wears). Fine read....
Here are the links to book 1 & book 3 -- Unholy Ghosts (Downside Ghosts, Book 1) --- Downside Ghosts (3) - City of Ghosts---- Enjoy...

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark and different urban fantasy 1 Aug 2010
By Gareth Wilson - Falcata Times Blog TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Having loved the dark world created by Stacia in the previous novel, I really couldn't wait to get to grips to see how this title would improve the world as well as the characters. What you get is still the same fast paced action but its backed up with a very sensitive principle character who is not only emotionally weak but also a woman who lives on her wits rather than straight out kick ass ability. It's refreshing, its got a darker edge than a lot of the titles out there but most of all it's a title that may escape a few radars for a while yet. Whilst following a character who has an addiction may be a bit tough for a number of readers it adds to the vulnerability and as such is something that will make this a read that sticks in your memory. Great stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars I will only offer this... 9 Aug 2010

I won't bore anyone by going over what's already been said.

I loved this book, I hated this book, I threw this book at my sun bed, very nearly chucked it in the pool and at one point refused to continue reading it, only to grumble to myself and pick it up again seconds later.
I have blistering red sun burn from a few hours in which I became completely absorbed and forgot the real world around me.
Forget drug abuse this book is a health hazard In the best way. You can loose yourself in it, forget yourself, and live through characters you love, even though you know you shouldn't.
If that doesn't say it, I don't know how to.

And even though this book and I nearly distroyed one another at points, I will throw out clothes I have only worn once so that I can fit it in my suit case, take it home and put it where it belongs. On my bookshelf, with my other favourites.
