The second book in this edgy urban fantasy trilogy. Simply Outstanding 12 July 2010
Format:Paperback
I am emotionally wrung out after Unholy Magic. I don't know how Stacia Kane does it, because seriously, the main characters are people you shouldn't like. The heroine, Chess, is a promiscuous drug addicted 'church witch', her friend 'Terrible' is an enforcer for her drug dealer and her boyfriend is a gangster in a rival gang - but Stacia draws you in and makes you care about, and sympathise with, the characters.

I don't want to spoil it for anyone who is following the series, so I'll just say that this book made me cry. Several times. We learn more about the characters and get an insight into why Chess is the way she is. Her inner monologue is sometimes so heartbreaking, it was hard to listen to - I just wanted to mother this fictional character and give her a big fat hug. We learn more about Lex and my favourite character, Terrible, completely steals the show. I LOVE the interaction between Chess and Terrible - they are both very broken, jaded, people, but there is something so innocent and sweet about them when they are together.

There was a good solid (not to metion creepy) plot but, for me, some truly phenomenal character development overshadowed it in this book and the interaction between Chess and Terrible is what is I am left mulling over after finishing it. Although some people will probably be turned off by the drug use, I think Stacia handles it really well and doesn't glamourise it at all. In fact, quite the opposite.

Can't wait for book 3 - City of Ghosts

I will not add to what has already been said, I agree with all four posts, be warned though this is pretty hard to read at times, I found it upetting regarding her brutal past and cried how she was so matter of fact about the abuse & how she was convinced that she deserved it anyway, that she is tainted somehow. The most harrowing for me ah I can't tell you but I will tell you this, is when she gets stuck at a clients house. The highlight are the glimpses of purity of love that is Terrible, what a stunning complicated character you really feel for him, (Lex though I could throttle what blinkers he wears). Fine read....

I won't bore anyone by going over what's already been said.

I loved this book, I hated this book, I threw this book at my sun bed, very nearly chucked it in the pool and at one point refused to continue reading it, only to grumble to myself and pick it up again seconds later.
I have blistering red sun burn from a few hours in which I became completely absorbed and forgot the real world around me.
Forget drug abuse this book is a health hazard In the best way. You can loose yourself in it, forget yourself, and live through characters you love, even though you know you shouldn't.
If that doesn't say it, I don't know how to.

And even though this book and I nearly distroyed one another at points, I will throw out clothes I have only worn once so that I can fit it in my suit case, take it home and put it where it belongs. On my bookshelf, with my other favourites.
