"Unholy Cross" is the brand new fourth studio album by Swedish power metal band "Bloodbound". The line up features the founding guitar team of Henrik and Tomas Olsson, bass player Andreas Bromann, key-player Fredrik Berch, drummer Pelle Akerlind while also introducing lead singer Patrik Johansson (not to be confused with Nils Patrick Johansson of "Astral Doors" and "Lion's share").
On "Unholly Cross" the `epic' element is stronger than ever, found on the guitar passages, on the anthemic choruses as well as on the intros. In contrast to its provoking artwork, one is convinced that "Unholy Cross" has conceptually more to do with glory, battling, moving ahead and facing consequences rather than religious questioning or black metal themes. On the other hand, one could interpret the lyrics in an allegorical sense, and in that way find links to religious beliefs or spiritualism.
One could also claim that the album draws somewhat towards classic/traditional heavy metal; not as much in terms of production, as "Unholy Cross" enjoys state of the art production qualities, but in terms of song-writing with riffs and rhythm section bringing strongly to mind bands like "Grimm Reaper" and "Manowar". As always, great emphasis is placed on the melodic side of the compositions particularly regarding the vocals and guitars, featuring some of the best six-string solos and harmonies the guitarists have ever come up with. Favorite tracks include "The ones we left behind", "Drop the bomb", "Together we fight" and "Moria".
I have to agree with the cover sticker proposing the album to fans of "Hammerfall", "Sabaton" as well as "Phantom Mask" and "Magic Kingdom". "Bloodbound-Unholy Cross" is indeed a great power-epic metal release for almost any fan of the genre.
