This has got to be the worst book I have ever read. Disappointment from start to finish (in particular the finish). The acclaim of it being as gripping as the works of Bram Stoker are quite frankly ridiculous and the only similarity I found was that both books contain the word vampire.
Grammatically the book is hard to follow in in some parts and when I was reading it initially I was sure that it had been written in another language and poorly translated to English.
After further research I established that the book was a collaborative effort by two authors. Not one that I thought worked too well.
2/3 of the way through the book I knew what the ending was and I am no rocket scientist when it comes to these things.
However this is purely down to my personal opinion. Perhaps you will like it! Happy reading!

There are so many books around just now featuring all types of strange vampirical forms that it is good to return to the tense and atmospheric style of Bram Stoker. The period setting is very well set out for the reader, transporting us to occupied Prussia at the turn of the 19th. century where the French, in their wisdom are preparing for their destiny.
Some will not even make the march east as a strange series of murders has taken place, believed to have been carried out by vampires, due to the manner in which the bodies have been drained of blood.
This is the fourth (I believe) book in the series though I haven't read the earlier releases. However, although there are some difficulties in working out just who relates to whom, it doesn't spoil the investigations carried out by Procurator Hanno Stiffeniis, a Prussian, working alongside Colonel Serge Lavedrine of the French Army in Occupation.
It's a well-crafted book, absorbing the reader as the two unlikely partners follow the precious few clues most of which surround a beautiful Prussian girl, Emma Rimmele - and an unlikely realtionship with the enemy! At least in this book, little credence is given to vampires which only rise at night, fly off at the speed of light or whatever today's lot do, rather it is a much deeper, almost soul-searching format these supposed creatures attain. It worked for me and, although the ending seemed rather rushed, I enjoyed the book and will keep an eye on Hanno Stiffeniis for the future.

If you haven't read any of the other books in this series, you could be forgiven for not being able to pin down the year in which it is set. Only around page 50 is the reader given the clue that we are four years "after (the battle of) Jena" which makes the year 1810. The place is Prussia, currently occupied by Napoleaon's victorious French army and in the town of Lotingen the first of several blood-drained, throat-ripped bodies is discovered and - then as now - we know what that means. But before anyone can utter the "v" word, local magistrate and serious student of philosophy Hanno Stiffeniis is on the case, determined to track down a human, rather than supernatural killer. Hampered by strange personal urges and memories - especially when it comes to hanging around graveyards at night! - the upright and rational Stiffeniis follows the growing trail of corpses into the middle of the occupying French army - an army on high alert as it is clearly planning for its ill-fated march on Moscow - which is not a clever place for a Prussian to be.
"Unholy Awakening" is the latest in this highly-regarded series created by the husband-and-wife team (He English, she Italian) which writes as Michael Gregorio. It is rich on period detail and the regular characters are humane, fully-rounded and convincing. The initial 'hook' of the series was the hero's admiration of and dedication to the Geman philosopher Kant. The new novel has less philosophical references and is more of a straightforwrd historical thriller, with a generous hint of vampirism (based on fascinating contemporary sources) which will certainly not hurt sales!
