A refreshingly queer take on the classic British horror film and inspired by cult classics such as The Wicker Man and Hammer House of Horror, Unhappy Birthday has a playfully retro vibe, a healthy irreverence and a deliciously deviant heart. Starring David Paisley (Holby City), David McGillivray (House of Whipcord) and Jonathan Keane (Spring).
A surprise birthday party becomes a living nightmare for city-dwelling couple Sadie and Rick and their friend Jonny. They are invited to visit the remote tidal island of Amen by Corinne an enigmatic local who hopefully holds the answers to long-buried family secrets. Amen is populated by a historically close-knit community who discourage strangers from visiting. So why have these three outsiders really been allowed on to the island? Despite the bucolic nature of the island the trio have a growing sense of unease, but they find themselves trapped by the tide and at the mercy of the islanders. As the horror of their situation unfolds, these visitors will wish they d never been born!

I caught this as part of a festival at our local cinema and decided to give it a chance - I loved it! The story is unusual and gripping with a real sting in its tail. It has fairly graphic scenes of sex and horror interspersed with very dark humour. It even has pathos though the overwhelming mood is one of a creepy psychological thriller. To say anything more would be to spoil a twisted yarn set in a hauntingly beautiful landscape.

What a clever mix of ideas - top marks to the creators. The cinematography and lighting are of exquisite quality. It's haunting, tantalising, creepy, sexy, eerie, funny...very cleverly put together. Am looking forward to what this pair come up with next.

Wow...
Love is tidal right? The whole premise of the story is very well portrayed and done very well. Some lovely shot's throughout and I think the gore within it was perfectly placed... if that can happen?
Basically, a REALLY good film and can not wait to see more from a clearly talented, up and coming director!

Disappointing
I didn't find a single scene scary and there weren't any funny moments either. It didn't live up to expectations. The films of the 1960s and 70s are far superior.

Gripping horror and steamy sex
Beautiful cinematography and gripping original narrative. Worth seeing. Sex scenes not bad either. Looking forward to next Harriott and Matthews collaboration.

The pacing in this film is slightly uneven, bits of it drag when they should flow and towards the end when there should be suspense it just seems funny. Read more
