More About the Author

Although he is now getting old and his beard (when unshaven) is going grey and makes him resemble a badger, Steve Davey is insanely optimistic and believes that the best of life is always in front of him. A writer and photographer based in London, Steve has turned his day job into a way of life. He travels compulsively and is in love with the chaos of being on the road. A self-confessed crap sightseer, he is more interested in how places work and often how they don't, than visiting monuments and museums. He would also rather be told he resembles Jean Reno than a badger and is working on immoral ways to use this to his own advantage.

Steve's work has appeared in magazines, books and newspapers all over the world. He is the author and principal photographer of Unforgettable Places to See Before You Die published by BBC Books. This bestselling title has sold over 300,000 copies and has some 30 co-editions around the world. A second title Unforgettable Islands to Escape to Before You Die, was published in 2007, and involved Steve catching 99 flights in a year and flying the equivalent of over seven times around the world.

2013 saw Steve publish two books; Around the World in 500 Festivals (Kuperard, 2013) and a second edition of Footprint Travel Photography. To complement the first edition of this book, Steve launched a unique series of travel photography tours and London courses.

Steve accompanies all of the tours providing his unique blend of tailored tuition, encouragement and boundless enthusiasm. Forthcoming destinations include Uzbekistan, Jordan and the Arctic. You can see more about these on

Product Description

"'This beautifully illustrated book [Unforgettable Journeys] includes journeys that will satisfy the adventurer in all of us. Tracking mountain gorillas in Rwanda? No problem. Shackleton's voyage to Antarctica? Piece of cake. There are practical details if you want to tackle any of the trips. For the less intrepid there are journeys closer to home - walking with Wordsworth in England and a horse-drawn wagon trip around Ireland.'" (Sunday Telegraph)

'Inspiring, well-written and well put together.' [Unforgettable Journeys]

" (Geographical)

"'This book [Unforgettable Things] does exactly what it says on the tin: it is packed with gorgeous images of places that you really, really want to visit - and makes you slightly hate the authors for having been able to do all these things ... And since more of us are eschewing beach holidays and choosing trips with a life-changing experience built in, it can almost be seen as a tick-list for the get-up-and-go crowd.'" (Nicki Symington Observer)

"'With 40 recommendations, the great photos and inspirational text of this book crystallise exactly what we all love about travel.'" (Wanderlust) --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

From the 'escape' bit of the title I thought this was going to be a PR job for tropical paradises, but it's not at all. You've got all kinds of islands here, from the Scilly Isles (a personal favourite) through the Ile de la Cité in Paris, to the Stockholm archipelago. I liked the fact that some of these islands are within my reach - I could actually go there on holiday - whereas others are the stuff of fantasty. It's highly unlikely that I will ever get to Kubu Island in Botswana, for example, but it looks an incredible place.

This book has a fresh feel to it. The text is a nice, easy read, thoughtful and containing off-beat nuggets of information, and the photography is excellent.

'Unforgettable Islands...' is far more than just the standard run-of-the-mill coffee-table photographic book. The images are breathtaking for sure, but the text includes an unusual depth of useful information and enough atmosphere to really draw you into the beauty and fascination of some of the most enticing places in the world. Steve Davey's name is familiar to many since, apart from his books, he has also built a career on producing well-crafted travel features for magazines and newspapers. Davey's eye for an evocative anecdote is as clear as his eye for an original photographic angle. Marc Schlossman too is clearly a talented photojournalist, and added his skills to ensure that this book is not only pure 'eye-candy' for anyone with a yearning to see some of the world's most intriguing or attractive islands but is also a refreshingly good read.

Keep 'Unforgettable Islands to Escape to Before You Die' in an accessible spot on your bookshelf. Flip through once in a while and you will almost certainly see that it lives up to its promise...and offers all the inspiration needed to actually head out there and see some of these places.

The Unforgettable... series has always had amazing photographs, stunning locations and an approach of a coffee table book rather than a travel guide. This is the fourth title in the series and is up to the usual standard.

There islands covered here are not necessarily the ones you would imagine. One of the reasons is that they decided not to repeat any from previous books. So no Galapagos, Cuba, Zanzibar or others previously featured. However, this does leave you with Rapa Nui, The Seychelles, Tierra del Fuego and many others. The advice here is limited, but that's not the intention. As ever its to show you the amazing places and give you a taster for 'that holiday'. Its does that as well as ever.

I like being a bit more active on my holidays. So this is probably my least favourite in the series. However, its still up to the usual standard and provides enough for me to keep going back to. If you want to find some of the best islands in the world for your holiday then get this to get you inspired.

Review of ‘Unforgettable islands to escape to before you die’ by Steve Davey and Marc Schlossman. 5 May 2014

Review of ‘Unforgettable islands to escape to before you die’ by Steve Davey and Marc Schlossman.

CITATION: Davey, S. and Schlossman, M. (2007). Unforgettable islands to escape to before you die. London: Firefly Books.

Reviewer: Dr W. P. Palmer

‘Unforgetable islands to escape to before you die’ is a well produced book in colour, not big enough to be a coffee table book, but too large to take in one’s luggage. Its dimensions are 0.8 x 7.1 x 9.5 inches and it weighs nearly two pounds. However it is a little gem for those addicted to island travel. The choice of just forty islands from the tens of thousands of islands in the world is obviously a difficult task and any traveller would agree with the choice of some the islands, but would replace others with their own favourites. The text accompanying the pictures is good but often some of the attractions on the islands are omitted. For example, Tanna Island in the Vanuatu archipelago is mentioned but not its fantastic volcano where molten lava bubbling and exploding in its crater can be observed.

The forty islands featured in ‘Unforgettable islands to escape to before you die’ are listed below:

Eleuthera, the Bahamas
Kubu Island, Botswana
Islands of Lake Tana, Ethiopia
Pico Ruivo, Madeira
Sagar, India
Islands of Serenity, Tokyo, Japan
The Vanuatu Archipelago, South
Western Pacific
Cousine and Praslin Islands, the
Hong Kong, China
Si Phan Don, Laos
El Nido Islands, Palawan, Philippines
Arnorgos, Greece
The Golden Temple, Amritsar, India
The Florida Keys, USA
Bali, Indonesia
Santa Barbara Islands, USA
Southern Dalmatian Islands, Croatia
Yasawa Islands, Fiji
Lord Howe Island, Australia
Sri Lanka
Sark, Channel Islands, UK
Lamu, Kenya
Rapa Nui IEaster Island]
Ile de la Cite, Paris, France
Isles of Scilly, UK

The Society Islands, French Polynesia
Stockholm, Sweden
Tierra del Fuego, Argentina
Phang Nga Bay Islands, Thailand
Newfoundland, Canada
Socotra, Republic of Yemen

This book is well worth purchasing for those interested in attractive islands as it can be found discounted without too much difficulty.
