Product Description

Islands are unique - their very isolation allows them to be different. Unforgettable Islands to Escape to Before You Die takes you to the most spectacular islands on the planet. Some are remote, others you will never have heard of. Some are more familiar but are shown in a way that will surprise and intrigue you.

From the ancient rock island of Kubu in the middle of a salt pan in Botswana, to thriving Hong Kong Island; from the quiet remoteness of the Stockholm Archipelago to the frenetic festival on Sagar Island in the Ganges in India and even from the snowy wastes of Svalbard in the high Arctic to the deserted shores of Socotra off the coast of Yemen this book will show you a world you probably never knew existed but won't be able to resist exploring.

Brought to you by the same team as the internationally bestselling Unforgettable Places to See Before You Die, this lavishly illustrated and evocatively written book that will educate and inspire both the experienced and armchair traveller alike.

From the 'escape' bit of the title I thought this was going to be a PR job for tropical paradises, but it's not at all. You've got all kinds of islands here, from the Scilly Isles (a personal favourite) through the Ile de la Cité in Paris, to the Stockholm archipelago. I liked the fact that some of these islands are within my reach - I could actually go there on holiday - whereas others are the stuff of fantasty. It's highly unlikely that I will ever get to Kubu Island in Botswana, for example, but it looks an incredible place.

This book has a fresh feel to it. The text is a nice, easy read, thoughtful and containing off-beat nuggets of information, and the photography is excellent.

You only live once! 7 July 2007
Format:Hardcover
'Unforgettable Islands...' is far more than just the standard run-of-the-mill coffee-table photographic book. The images are breathtaking for sure, but the text includes an unusual depth of useful information and enough atmosphere to really draw you into the beauty and fascination of some of the most enticing places in the world. Steve Davey's name is familiar to many since, apart from his books, he has also built a career on producing well-crafted travel features for magazines and newspapers. Davey's eye for an evocative anecdote is as clear as his eye for an original photographic angle. Marc Schlossman too is clearly a talented photojournalist, and added his skills to ensure that this book is not only pure 'eye-candy' for anyone with a yearning to see some of the world's most intriguing or attractive islands but is also a refreshingly good read.

Keep 'Unforgettable Islands to Escape to Before You Die' in an accessible spot on your bookshelf. Flip through once in a while and you will almost certainly see that it lives up to its promise...and offers all the inspiration needed to actually head out there and see some of these places.

The Unforgettable... series has always had amazing photographs, stunning locations and an approach of a coffee table book rather than a travel guide. This is the fourth title in the series and is up to the usual standard.

There islands covered here are not necessarily the ones you would imagine. One of the reasons is that they decided not to repeat any from previous books. So no Galapagos, Cuba, Zanzibar or others previously featured. However, this does leave you with Rapa Nui, The Seychelles, Tierra del Fuego and many others. The advice here is limited, but that's not the intention. As ever its to show you the amazing places and give you a taster for 'that holiday'. Its does that as well as ever.

I like being a bit more active on my holidays. So this is probably my least favourite in the series. However, its still up to the usual standard and provides enough for me to keep going back to. If you want to find some of the best islands in the world for your holiday then get this to get you inspired.
