This review is from: Unfinished Music No.1: Two Virgins (Audio CD)
John Lennon's infamous first non-Beatles recording, the first of 3 experimental collaborations with Yoko Ono, is still challenging listening today, and god only knows what the Beatles fans at the time made of it. Two Virgins consists of two 14 minute sound collages - 'Side One' starting with birdsong and whistles that amusingly make this sound not unlike the soundtrack from cult children's TV programme The Clangers at times, giving way to random bursts of guitar, Yoko's wailing vocals, a jaunty pub-style piano and snippets of random dialogue (Yoko: "Who's there?", "It's me Hilda, I'm just home for tea" replies John in a cod northern accent.)Side Two is more of the same, though with a gospel organ giving proceedings the air of a demented church service (complete with John's psalm singing and amen-ing at the end). Throughout Yoko wails, while a huge farting bass feedback gives way to a sort of early sampling as bursts of an old gramophone record interrupt the proceedings. In the end, ones ability to enjoy actually listening to this record depends on ones enjoyment of experimental avant-garde noise. The 'White Albums' Revolution Number 9 was a genuinely stunning sound collage, put together with the assistance of some of the best sound engineers in the world at Abbey Road. In contrast Two Virgins, while always busy, is very much a home recording, and with its basic sound design lacks the aural excitement of Revolution Number 9, while Yoko's wailing vocals soon become tiresome. Alternately amusing, intriguing, and downright embarrassing, Two Virgins is ultimately more interesting for the people who are making the noise, rather than the noise itself. The CD re-issue bonus track is the only melodic offering on this CD, Remember Love, the B-Side of Give Peace a Chance, is a simple but beautiful song, with Yoko singing normally for a change, and John plucking on the acoustic guitar, this track is musically very reminiscent of the 'White Album's Julia. A hidden gem.

Well what can one say about a recording of John and Yoko screaming, yelling, breaking wind (Yoko's early example of "girl power") and general stoned ramblings? Not a lot really. But it is a cool album to leave lying about when you have guests around..."Oh that? Yeah it's Two Virgins - very rare that..." This is really an album for completists and for that reason (it is made by a Beatle after all) it deserves at least one star. At least by releasing this album and getting it out of his system, Lennon kept such material off Abbey Road!
