Synopsis

The sight of the writer Roald Dahl sitting by a roaring fire in a comfortable armchair greeted viewers tuning in to the popular television show TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED, which ran from 1979 to 1988. Dahl offered a brief introduction to each show, neatly setting the scene for the adaptations of his short stories that followed. Packed full of suspense and drama, every episode was a self-contained treat, with a brand new set of characters and scenarios unfolding each week. Contains every episode from the fourth series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best series bought so far, 6 April 2009
By S. C. Johnson - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This 4th series is undoubtedly my favourite out of the first 4 series I have bought so far. Not only does it have the most episodes (17), but I think there are lots of good episodes. My favourite is "Shatterproof" about a man who is hired to murder someone, but who is cleverly outwitted. "A woman's help" is excellent too" about a woman who hires female assistants as she is ill, but whose husband has some other plans.

Nigel Havers and Telly Savalas (Kojak) star in this series. Packaged exceptionally well as usual with a brief description of each episode inside the cover. Theses are very well written and you will not be disappointed by the surprise endings on many on here. Just when you think you have worked some of these out there is always another twist. This 4th series is highly recommended and well worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars More tales than the previous three series, seventeen in all to enjoy, 10 Jul 2007
By Lando Malak "Dok" (Sheffield, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
At the time of writing I have been watching this on ITV3 on Freeview and absolutely loving it. As a kid in the 80's I occasionaly used to watch it last thing on a sunday night at my nan nans and remember finding it a little bit creepy in a strange sort of way. It has a good mixture of crime, comedy and just complete weirdness. Some episodes are dark and some uplifting but always with some kind of twist at the end.

These tales are just as enjoyable as they were on their original showing and are far more imaginative than most of what is on TV these days and that for me will always be the most important thing in a programme however old or new. For some reason and I am not sure why but there always seems to be an American featured in it (not that it matters but I have just become curious as to why this is).

Anyway, if like me you love programmes similar to this for example Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Twilight Zone etc. or anthology programmes in general, then I would definitely recommend that you give this a chance if you have never seen it before. As with all these type of programmes there will probably be some episodes that you like less than others, but overall there is something for everyone.

At the time of writing I haven't got any of these boxsets so I can't judge the picture quality but trust that it is at least as good as the ones that have been shown on ITV3 and so I will definitely be buying them eventually.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing, 28 April 2008
By ianrmillard - See all my reviews

How refreshing it is to see these stories again. Made from the late 1970's (this series 1980), free of the politically correct shibbolleths of today, starring famous names and equally skilled unknowns, adapted from stories by Raould Dahl and others. My favourite from this series (I have the somplete set) is the one about the little boy who saves a giant turtle from death at the hands of greedy or cruel holiday people in the Caribbean. Most of the stories have a twist, usually funny or theatrically effective, but this one is, I think, unique: sad, yet beautiful. No surprise that it is one of those stories by Dahl himself. Brilliant and moving. I truly recommend both this DVD and all the "Tales of the Unexpected".
