5.0 out of 5 stars Sophisticated and nuanced 27 July 2001

While lesbian parenting, AIDS, and mother/daughter struggles may be topics that are featured in a growing number of works of fiction, this particular novel brings them together in a totally unsentimental way, with sharp yet lyrical writing that displays the depths and subtle undercurrents of relationship that others miss. There is great sensitivity here to the idiosyncracies of character -- no one is predictable yet everyone is believeable -- and the scenes between the main character and her therapist are bracing, realistic, and have quite a surprising edge. Highly recommended.

Format:Paperback
This novel presents an unusual approach to AIDS and motherhood. The very human (and sometimes funny) story is smoothly integrated with the serious issues that are at the heart of the novel. What makes the tone distinctive is that it manages, somehow, to be tender without being sentimental and biting without being sarcastic. This novel is not about the outcome--which one could predict--but the journey, which one cannot.

Format:Paperback
A disapointing read. Whilst attempting to deal with extreamly moral and ethical issues, the storyline was bland and predictable. The content attempted to tackle the subjects of AIDs, lesbianism and parenthood at a deep and meaningful level, in a relatively short book. However, there was something about this book that meant that one could not just stop half way through. Perhaps a curious and wonderous edge drifts you through to a nondiscript end.
