More About the Author

Allie Sommerville was born in Croydon, Surrey but now lives and writes on an Island off of the South Coast of England.
Ambitions of becoming a nurse and/or ballerina wore off by the time she was a teenager, but during her student days, she was always praised for her writing skills.
Allie became obsessed with the books of the English author Laurie Lee, and his work, 'As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning' eventually led to a trip round Spain in a campervan, following in his footsteps. The 'van wasn't as reliable as she and her husband had hoped, and with Allie becoming more nervous and paranoid as their journey progressed, she realised she wasn't cut-out for adventure!

Allie became a student of Art History in 2000, and despite the tribulations of their Spanish trip, she and her husband toured Italy and France. More adventures ensued, which convinced Allie that she ought to write a book about them - both as a useful insight into 'life on the road' and also to realise her other long-time ambition of becoming an author.

Uneasy Rider - Confessions of a Reluctant Traveller is a humorous take on independent travel, which anyone, whether or not interested in travel, will enjoy.
Don't expect glowing prose about how wonderful everywhere is - it is not a guidebook!

Coming soon: A journey aroung mainland GB in the same old 'unrealiable' campervan.

Allie's memoir, now a KINDLE download, is a nostalgic trip through an English post-war childhood.
'To Set My Feet A-Dancing' is wistful and light-hearted, looking back to a time when children were allowed play in the park until dark, clothes were home made and owning a car meant you were rich.
Allie firstly draws upon her time as a young amateur dancer. Appearing with her older sister at various venues in shows arranged by their eccentric dancing teacher made a lasting impression on her, though not always for the right reasons!
Amongst other subjects, she looks at schooldays, Christmas's past and seaside holidays in an age of innocence.

The memoir ends with the history of two ordinary families, tracing their lives back to the 1800s.

5.0 out of 5 stars Uneasy Rider - Easy reader. 15 May 2011
This is a genuine and cleverly written book with the authors enthusiasm shining through. Travelling with a family in a camper van must have many fraught moments but the author not only freely admits to them but shows the hilarious side to many of them. Who knew that a motorway ran alongside the ruins of Pompeii? This is a good laugh and great value. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very easy Uneasy Rider ! 18 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is definitely worth a read if you own or are thinking of owning a motorhome.
Why ?
Well certainly not because it is full of handy hints and technical doodads, it isn't
It is written from the perspective of a really 'normal' young lady about her and her husbands travels throughout Europe in their various wheeled homes.
It is written in a way every one( men and women ) can and will empathise with, telling of the ups, downs, trials and tribulations of motorhome life.
It is probably the most entertaining 'factual' book I have ever read.. To call it merely a travel book would be a travesty.
There is one down side.. It ended too soon and left me longing for more of the same !

5.0 out of 5 stars Loads of laughs! 10 July 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Really, really, really enjoyed this book. It's written in such a way that you empathise with Allie immediately- anyone who has passport panics when handing it over to hotel staff will definitely have a laugh at this.
My favourite bit is Allie visiting the parador and her recollection of the video in Spanish class- she pictures herself sitting there but the journey to get there is another matter. It's just great! And from now on will aways be giggling when I hear the words Se puede!
Se puede?
Can't wait for the next installment!

5.0 out of 5 stars a good read and amusing in parts. 23 Oct 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is not so much a book in that the chapters dont follow on from each other. Its more a collection of experiences that the author and her long suffering other half have had whilst on their travels . However dont let that put you off.. Its a very enjoyable read.. I didnt buy to read about how to travel in camper home for hols.. I bought it to read about the authors trials and mis haps of which there are many. There are a few tips in the back of the book which might be useful to some people. It was good to read about other destinations form the usual run of the mill as not many guide/travel books cover Gibralter and the Vatican City.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Motorhomers View 5 Nov 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Great read especially as we are travelling Europe ourselves. We could relate to much of what we were reading. Amusing tales very similar to our own experiences. We had even stayed at one of the sites that Allie had stayed at! Its not a 'how to guide' and not intended to be so but I imagine 'new' motorhomers would be inspired to try the same trip.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It is very well written and I could imagine myself being in the same situation as the writer's partner, with my girlfriend being as nervous as the writer. The only difference would be that I would not be able to cope with all the mechanical mishaps and the thought of going down a Swiss mountain without any brakes, gives me nightmares. Some of the stories are very funny and made me laugh, but there are also some useful tips for anyone who has not got around to travelling in Europe with a campervan. The only thing that I find odd, is how anyone could rate the book with less than 4 or 5 stars. There are obviously some very strange people out there or perhaps they just like to be nasty!
