5.0 out of 5 stars Funny & Enjoyable 17 Sep 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This couple of CDs comes from a public concert, whose aim, I think, was not "intellectual", but mainly that of entertaining a large audience with enjoyable music and a lively performance.
My 5 stars are then aligned with the perspective of entertainement, not that of a philological disquisition about french opera or baroque music. In this perspective, I think Haim and all other performers did really well.
The chosen repertoire is well mixed: it matches a lot of famous arie (e.g. Purcell's Sound of Trumpet, Haendel's Lascia ch'io pianga, Fammi combattere and Hallalujah...) and some less known (I am sorry for French friends, but Rameau and Lulli are well below Haendel's ranking as fame and recognizability). Personally, I arrived to this CD without knowing french baroque music, and it was a serendipity, as I found several arie that tantalized me to approach these new (for me) composers.
Anyhow, all toghether the mix is charming, most of all because the interpreters are an all-star team of the baroque repertoire. Maybe here they are not always at their top, but a disc where you can find Dessay, Von Otter, Petibon, Lehtipuu, Jaroussky, Hallberg, Mingardo, Villazon and Piau is worth of being at least listened!
I did not always agree with Haim's paces: I often found them quite too hurried, but that didn't stop the enjoyment and, sometimes, it led me to a new way of thinking some known motifs.
So, be warned: if you are looking for something refined, terribly serious, intellectually deep, this is not the disc for you. Definitely not if you are not ready to accept the Hallelujah chorus sung by the public; not if you are not intrigued by a latin-american version of Sound the Trumpet (sung by a charming, brilliant and ironic Jaroussky); not if you are not curious of an entrée comique for Rameau's Platée involving a phone call.
Well, the public enjoyed all this stuff, and so did I. I hope you too...

5.0 out of 5 stars Une fête baroque 22 Jun 2014

This is a fantastic CD. If you are fond of baroque music, you should certainly have this disc. This baroque concert ends with one of
the finest "Hallelujah" from Messiah I have ever heard. Emmanuelle Haim is outstanding. I will give a strong recommendation to this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars I would like to be there. 28 Dec 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
It's an exraordinary concert. Everybody is there from Natalie Dessay to Patricia Petibon, and I would like to be there to wittness this great event. Emmanuel Haim is great, Orcestra and Coro is great. Atmosphere is great and you can realize when just you are listenning. Record quality is perfect in a live concert. Everybody should have who likes baroque opera which is the best musical opera in my opinion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Too mundane, not creative enough 15 Aug 2012
Format:Audio CD
A couple of CDs that are only there for the pleasure of your soul and it starts as intense as possible with Jean-Philippe Rameau. The first track from Les Indes Galantes takes us to the wildest country we can imagine though it's only a mental trip. Repetitive music that has the force of some musical mantra amplified by the very systematic dressing, undressing and redressing of this fundamental and short musical sentence - or is it a magical formula, a curse from the savages it introduces - now with percussions, now with the two voices, male and female, now with some more strings, without ever ending. And we are in it for two hours.

Hippolyte et Aricie is what the French love over all a tenebrae, a dirge, a funeral rite, a long lamentation on love lost, re-found and lost again. And Phèdre of the legend if not mythology, the daughter of Minos and Pasiphaé so much liked under Louis XIV in France, turns now and then jealous and murderous. She finds the violence of an intended vengeance and crime. Racine is just behind and the allusion is direct and cultured in that century and time when the court people wanted to shine by their knowledge of their heritage, even when they had little inheritance.

Then Dardanus brings Venus down onto the stage, another beloved scene and event the French could die for, die of some heart attack, I mean intense love excitation at the vision of this feminine body that has no flaw but has all the attractive shapes and adornments that make that vision delightful. So then the senses can find some peace in the enjoyment of that beauty. But the heart will take over and some drums will pound in your chest and your ears to lead you to conquer without stopping but by leaping up and pouncing down onto the prey.

5.0 out of 5 stars I wish I'd been there... 5 Aug 2013
By M. Joyce TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
"Une fête baroque" is a two-CD live recording of a gala concert held in December 2011 to mark the tenth anniversary of the Concert d'Astrée and to raise funds for the Gustave Roussy cancer research foundation. Concerts such as these do not always live up to their billing, but this one really sounds as if it would have been great to have been part of the audience at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris.

The roster of singers involved (they include Natalie Dessay, Anne Sophie von Otter, Rolando Villazón and Sandrine Piau) virtually guarantees aural satisfaction and they rarely disappoint. Although Emmanuelle Haim's tempi incline towards the brisk, her obvious affinity and, indeed, affection for this music shines through and there is some glorious playing from the instrumentalists involved.

The first CD focuses largely on the great French composer Jean-Philippe Rameau. The disc gets off to a cracking start with the Danse du Calumet de la Paix from the "Sauvages" section of the opéra-ballet "Les Indes galantes", leading into a duet by Natalie Dessay and Stéphane Degout. There are many highlights on this disc; personal favourites are the Air de la chasseresse from Rameau's "Hippolyte et Aricie" and Anne Sophie von Otter's impassioned singing of Phèdre's aria from the same opera, but Patricia Petibon is good value as La Folie from "Platée". The remainder of the first disc is taken up by two excerpts from Lully's "Thésée", Christopher Purves as the Cold Genius from Purcell's "King Arthur" and a version of the same composer's "Sound the Trumpet"; my wife had this track almost permanently on repeat and I defy anyone not to smile with joy or even laugh out loud at this!

Disc 2 is devoted to Handel.
