5.0 out of 5 stars Quite remarkable 16 Aug 2006
By N. Yeo
Format:Audio CD
There is no other way to describe this debut album. The maturity, originality and musical performance is both impressive from the first listen and mesmerizing on further plays. I can't recall ever being so impressed by the full content of an album - every track is distinctive, each one is superbly produced and frankly James Morrison makes a lot of the artists in and around the 'popular' charts look very average indeed. Snatches of great musical icons (e.g. Stevie Wonder) are scattered through James' vocal repertoire but these almost subliminal aural cues are intriguing hooks rather than plaguaristic in any way. I can't wait for further releases.

4.0 out of 5 stars Top class 21 Dec 2006
By Andy Edwards TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Another Reviewer referred to Rod Stewart in her review and I can certainly see the parallels with the young Rod the Mod. James Morrison has that old school R&B voice that Rod had before about 1976, when he went all smooth

Although it would be easy to dismiss this as just another album in an already crowded genre, it's that Soulful quality which lifts this above the rest. It's not particularly innovative, nor edgy, but it never sets out to be. This is well crafted music, with something to say about life and love and Morrison can look forward to a long career if he can equal this on that difficult second album.

As a fan of Soul from it's 70's, it is rare for me to be impressed by a contemporary artist to this extent, but I can heartily recommend James Morrison.

5.0 out of 5 stars What A Debut! 12 Aug 2006
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
When I first heard the single "You Give Me Something", I knew I had to buy any album this guy released. Seldom has this happened - in fact, not since Elton John have I purchased an album on the strength of just one single!

Every single track on this CD is five star. The music ranges from soully to upbeat, but each and every track is sung from the heart - and gets you right in the heart each time you hear it. I for one will never tire of listening to this album - it is a cracker in every respect.

For me, the best tracks are "Wonderful World" and "The Pieces Don't Fit Here Anymore", but that is beacuse they are related to my life at this present time. There is not a bum track on this album, and therefore, favourites are bound to change.

What this CD does is to get into your heart; the music, the lyrics - and James' voice - all join together to weave their magic and you are hooked.

This will be an all-time favourite, and, at a mere 21 years of age, James has got a glittering future. Keep your eyes on him!

My advice - get out there and buy this CD today! It's a cracker!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not too old for this! 22 Jan 2007
By JAK
Format:Audio CD
You know you're getting old when music all sounds the same. It's either synthesized dance music with zero lyrics, or some guy droning on to a guitar sounding like he wants to kill himself. I was starting to despair of finding an album I liked ever again, when James Morrison arrived.

When I first heard the album it didn't immediately click and I thought "here we go again, another tenner wasted". But after listening to it for a week and getting to know the lyrics, I was hooked. He has a fabulous tone to his voice, I can relate to the lyrics which are sung with feeling, and the music is catchy with a rocky/soulful edge. Highly recommended, even for us oldies!

5.0 out of 5 stars 'CLASSIC'.. a must buy 7 Sep 2006
Format:Audio CD
Well, a 'TRUELY ASTOUNDING ALBUM'.

I listen to a lot of music, and this one stands up higher than most new artists I've heard in the last 10 years.

The passion of Stevie Wonder from his early years with the gravelled tones of Terence Trent Darby.

Delivers great songs with a yearning. Not one bad track.

Tones of Lennon in some of the phrases, but delivered with heaps of soul.

This guy's gonna be around for a long long time, and the good thing is he's even better live.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the highlights of the year! 21 Feb 2007
Format:Audio CD
James Morrison's album is quite simply superb. His voice has that raw, gravelly and edgy quality found in the best soul/blues singers. The songs are phenomenal - poignant lyrics paired with melodies full of pathos, or irony.

Hard to pigeon-hole in terms of style, he veers between soul, blues, and alt-folk.

His lyrics are beautiful, hinting at hardships and heartaches, but also a staunch optimism and strength of character.

My favourite tracks are Wonderful World and You Give Me Something, but there is not a weak track on the album.

This is one of the best albums I have bought in the past 4 years. He is a fantastic artist. There is honesty and a real sense of integrity to him that I hope will continue a long, long time! Buy this!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Stunning 14 Aug 2006
Format:Audio CD
I agree with other reviewers. This album is a cracker. Saw and met him live at Summer Sundae where he opened the festival (bottom of the bill) So many people missed out. I was hooked from the first song, brilliant and what a nice guy, signed a flyer for my boy Jack.

I have read the comparisons etc Van Morrison etc, Stevie Wonder etc....has anyone thought Terence Trent Darby. Listen to Wishing Well and then listen to Track 1.....You've got to love it!!
