Synopsis
Two features. In UNDERWORLD, a dark and Gothic monster action movie, vampires and lycans (an ancient form of werewolf) are at war. While the vampires inhabit a gigantic castle that houses their ancestors' tombs, the lycans live underground in a dilapidated sewer cave. Both teams are equipped with big guns and are constantly innovating deadlier bullets to gain advantage over each other. On the vampire side, the leather-clad death agent Selene (Kate Beckinsale), delegates teams of vampires to attack the lycans, but when she discovers that the lycans have kidnapped a human medical student, Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman), she knows the worst is on its way. Against the orders of her superior, Kraven (Shane Brolly), who is obsessively in love with Selene, she awakens the most powerful vampire of all time, Viktor (Bill Nighy), and prepares for a massive feud against lycan leader, Lucian (Michael Sheen). Director Len Wiseman offers a tough, fast and gory addition to the horror-fantasy genre with UNDERWORLD. Impressive special effects show the lycans transforming from humans to werewolves, and their ability to squeeze silver bullets out of their skin is also rudely fascinating. Beckinsale is captivating in the role of the lead vamp, with her leather corset, red lips and double-fisted pistols perfectly communicating the glam-action mood of the film. Also included in the box set is the sequel to UNDERWORLD, UNDERWORLD: EVOLUTION.

4.0 out of 5 stars A few hours of really good entertainment, 9 Jan 2007
By Malpaso Man (Pencoed, UK) - See all my reviews
Well it's not an all time classic, I mean we probably won't be talking about this in 25 years time like we do with the first "Alien" film, but that said, a really excellent couple of films (which I personally enjoyed more than the "Blade" films). Casting Kate was a master-stroke, she is amazing in them both.
Slightly violent in places, but not completely a guys only film, I think most wives and girlfriends would enjoy it too. The setting is dark and gothic looking (think Brandon Lee "The Crow"), the vampires are arty & sophisticated looking (think Bowie and Catherine Deneuve in "The Hunger" - but brought up to date with Laptops & Maseratis), and the plot is good too (despite what a few other reviewers have written)
I prefer the first film to the second (I'm told there is talk of a third). The scene in the first film where Kate swivel shoots the floor to escape has become a classic scene, often being saved onto mobile phones and iPods.
I was pleasantly suprised when the package arrived from Amazon, that one of the films was the double disc version, so got three discs for under a tenner (and I actually watched the extras on it too). Good Stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars blood blood and more blodd............ hmmmmmmmmmmmm tasty!, 15 Aug 2008

I originally bought this because i had seen the first underworld and wanted to see the second. As with most films (apart from a few exceptions such as blade 2, shrek 2 and dark knight) the first film was a lot better than the second. I found the first was more gritty and more darker stylised. where as the second one i found was playing on the glory of its predacessor. it had some good links with the first film but seemed to drag on for too long and seemed somehow americanized hahaha. on the other hand had some good visual effects and lots of questions are answered from the first film. so a good history in the underworld series. overall: if your exopecting the second film to be as good as the first..... DONT COUNT ON IT! passable second
